Robert "Bob" Mark Bayless

Springfield - Robert "Bob" Mark Bayless, age 63 of Springfield, MO passed from this life suddenly at his home on September 9, 2018, in Springfield, MO. Born in Iowa City, IA on November 30, 1954, to Bill & Barbara Bayless, he would go on to earn a Bachelor's Degree at SMSU and a Master's Degree at Drury University. Bob taught Physical Education for the Springfield Public Schools for 28 years from 1979-2007. He was known by everyone as "Coach" being involved in his children's sports teams for many years. He proudly served in the National Guard as a member of the 135th Army Band for 26 years from 1988-2014. He went to Normandy with the 135th Army Band National Guard Unit for the 50th year anniversary of D-Day, performed on the deck of the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor and won numerous awards and certifications while in the military retiring as a Staff Sergeant in 2014. He married Sharon Gilliland Thomas on July 22, 2012 - he and Shari's 4th anniversary of their first date. He was actively involved in high school and college sports, refereeing many sports throughout the years. He achieved triple national status as a volleyball referee earning the following recognitions: PAVO National referee, USAV National referee and scorer. His other notable accomplishments: Well-known D-I and High School volleyball referee, served as President of the Springfield Volleyball Association of Referees, and officiated multiple National Championship tournaments including NCAA D-II, NAIA, NJCAA, and USAV. Bob was a lifetime sports fan, particularly of the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs. Watching his favorite teams always gave him great joy. He loved the game of volleyball, and would always give of his time to help out in any way he could to educate others.

He is survived by his wife: Shari; children and stepchildren: Branden (Stacy) Bayless, Chenille (Greg) Gaumer, Ryan Thomas, Ashley (David) Chen & Justin (Cailey) Thomas; Grandchildren: Nathaniel, Ava and William Bayless, Ethan, Gabriela, Malachi and Olivia Gaumer and Katherine Chen; Sisters Barbara Kae (Dana) Webster, Becky (Mike) Wellington & Christy Bayless; father-in-law James (Darlene) Gilliland and mother-in-law Brenda Brock; as well as a host of nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Bill Bayless and Barbara (Bayless) England; brother Mike Bayless; and grandchild Elia Gaumer.

Informal visitation will be held at Walnut Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Springfield, MO, on Sunday, September 16, 2018, 2:00 - 6:00 PM and the family will formally receive friends and family from 4:00 - 6:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 17, 2018, at 10:30 AM at Walnut Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Springfield, MO.

In celebration of Bob's life, the family encourages you to wear something to the funeral service that shows how you and Bob were connected to each other during his life (Sports, Cardinals, Chiefs, Volleyball, Music, Dance, Military or Bob's favorite color of Red).

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established at Arvest Bank in Bob Bayless' memory.
