Samuel Holmes

Sam was born in Springfield, MO, on November 3, 1997. He passed away Friday March 17th after ending his own life. He possessed a kind and clever sense of humor, and never had a bad word to say about anybody. He fought a long battle with anxiety and depression, and the decision to escape his pain was the one time he put himself first. Sam lived a full life, excelling in everything he did. He played golf since he was four, and competed for Glendale High School - where he helped take his team to the state title and finished fifth individually and was proud to compete for the Missouri State University Golf Team. He was a deep thinker who touched many lives with his quiet, supportive demeanor. He loved animals, especially his Doberman Bruno.

He was proceeded in death by his grandmother Joanne Foutty, and grandfather David Holmes. He is survived by his parents Mary Jane and Tim Holmes, and elder sibling Mary Scott of Springfield; his aunt and uncle, Mike and Karen Dreyer, their children Kacki and Jack, of Leawood, Kansas; his grandmother Sue of Springfield; his grandparents Toni Arnett and Sam Arnett of Lubbock, Texas; his grandfather John Foutty of Florida; and his additional extended family and many friends.

Visitation will be held at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, on Tuesday March 21st, from 5pm - 7pm. A Funeral Service will be held at The Venues, 2616 E. Battlefield, on Wednesday March 22nd at 2pm.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Missouri State Foundation - Men's Golf Team, Kenneth E. Meyer Alumni Center, 300 South Jefferson, Suite 100, Springfield, MO 65806

My beatiful brother Ernie
I am so sorry for the loss of your beautiful boy. I did not know him, but I wish I had. I recently learned about your son and his death from a recent Newsleader article about closing the gap in mental health services.

Sam's story deeply resonated with me, as I see my beatiful younger brother in his story. I lost my brother, Ernie, in 2006. He suffered with anxiety and depression from his teens extending into adulthood. He was active in gymnastics as a youth and loved to draw. His favorite classical music artist was Vivaldi and he appreciated works of art by Modigliani.

I did everything I knew to help him; however, I felt very much alone. It was terrifying. He died from alcohol abuse at the age of 38. A part of me died with him that day in July.

I was angry. I could not get anyone to see that at the core of his disease was mental/emotional. He needed help quickly to save his life.

I will always wonder if there were more I could have done.

I hope you do not mind that I have posted a photo of my brother.

Thank you for starting the conversation, and please reach out if there is anything I can do.

I lost my husband 3 years ago to suicide. He struggled with depression as well as alcohol abuse. I suffer from depression as well. Almost 2 years after his death ive tried to make it into something positive. I volunteer at AA and also attend a suicide support group here in springfield. If i can help one person then he didnt die in vain. I pray this young man is at peace. Now is a time to help, we should never judge. Please feel free anyone reading this if you need help with alcohol abuse or suicide grief or just need an ear to listen or a shoulder to cry on reach out to me. If i can't help you personally i will find someone who will. Bless Sam and his family and may his memory be one of love and joy.

To the Holmes Family:
We were heartbroken to learn of Sam's death. We enjoyed meeting Sam and your family during summer golf outings with our sons. Levi and Tanner always enjoyed being paired with Sam and thought the world of him as a fellow golfer and friend. Our most heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with you at such a terrible time.

I do not know Sam or the family, but feel a connection as my twin boys, who will be turning 20 both attend Missouri State University. I can't imagine the pain you are suffering, but I pray that you will find some peace through all of this.

Our family will send a donation to the Missouri State Men's Golf program as you requested.
