William "Bill" Kirsch Obituary
William "Bill" Kirsch

- - William "Bill" Kirsch died on February 20th, 2018, after fighting pancreatic cancer for two years. He pursued that fight with the same vigor, zest, and sense of humor that characterized his entire life. He refused to let his diagnosis prevent him from enjoying life or doing what needed to be done. For example, he may be one of the few cancer patients who needed to replace a chemotherapy pump after accidentally severing its line with a machete.

Bill grew up in Kansas City and attended the University of Missouri, where he met his future wife, Jan. Bill then served in the Navy as the Executive Officer of the U.S.S. Genesee, a tanker ship delivering fuel from Hawaii to troops fighting in the Vietnam War. After a brief stint as a mechanical engineer for Bendix Corporation, Bill decided to go back to Mizzou to earn his law degree.

After graduating from law school, Bill moved to Kimberling City with his then-wife, Jan, and his two sons, Matt and Daniel. There, he began a legal career that included approximately twelve years in private practice, one term as Stone County Prosecuting Attorney, and approximately four terms as an Associate Circuit Judge in Stone County. He also served his community in a variety of public service positions, including volunteer fireman, Reeds Spring School Board member, Public Water Supply District #2 Board member, and Reeds Spring School Foundation Board member.

Bill retired from the judiciary in 2000 to spend more time with Jan, who had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. They were fortunate to enjoy the next eleven years together, spending that time traveling and visiting family and friends.

Bill loved spending time outdoors with his family, and they spent countless happy hours together on the tennis court and on Table Rock Lake. He also loved to go fast, whether he was steering the hydroplane he built with his dad and brother, piloting his boat or jet ski, driving his Porsche, racing (and once crashing) a stock car, skiing on water or snow, jumping out of an airplane, or diving off a bridge attached to a bungee cord.

Bill leaves behind his sons and their families: Matt, Kerri, Eliza, and Kai, who live in Denver, Colorado, and Daniel, Laura, Evan, Mabel, and Thomas, who live in Overland Park, Kansas. He also leaves behind his older brother, Jim Kirsch, numerous other relatives, and his girlfriend, Janet Wallace, who shared many good times with him in recent years.

A service celebrating Bill's life will be held at the Reeds Spring Middle School auditorium, located at 345 Morrill Lane in Reeds Spring, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 7th. Instead of flowers, Bill and his family would appreciate donations to the Jan Kirsch Scholarship or Bill Kirsch Scholarship, Reeds Spring R-IV School Foundation, Attn: Jim Holt, 20281 State Hwy 413, Reeds Spring, MO 65737.
