Dr. Patrick O. Thompson Obituary
Dr. Patrick O. Thompson

November 23, 1938 - March 12, 2014

Patrick O. Thompson, DDS - "PO" to his dearest friends - age 75 of Springfield, Missouri, talented dentist, skilled clinician, accomplished fisherman, wordsmith, storyteller extraordinaire, loving father and Papa, and all-around great guy, departed this earthly life on March 12, 2014 at 12:45 am, surrounded by his loving family, in The Center for Compassionate Care at El Paso Hospice, El Paso, Texas.

Patrick was born in Oklahoma City, OK on November 23, 1938 to Eldon C. "Tommy" Thompson and Rosalie (Kimball) Thompson, moving shortly thereafter to Muskogee, OK where he would spend the remainder of his childhood. He was an accomplished football player in Junior High and High School, graduating from Muskogee Central High School in 1957. He attended Baylor University for one year, before finishing his undergraduate education at Northeastern State College in Tahlequah, and graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry in June of 1965 as a Doctor of Dental Surgery.

Pat was most proud of his service in the United States Navy after dental school, serving during the Vietnam era, and was recipient of the National Defense Medal. He spent most of his active service in San Diego, Alameda, and Naval Air Station - Kodiak Island, Alaska where he formed lifelong friendships.

After separating from the Navy, he moved his family to Springfield, MO where he established his first private dental practice in 1968. He was very active in local and regional organizations and study groups, and was an original founder of Parkcrest Dental Group in Springfield. He touched many lives during his 35 years of practice in Springfield, and is fondly remembered by his patients.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Kimberling City, and his faith, and personal relationship with God through the Lord Jesus Christ were the foundations of his life, and it was important to him that all of those whom he preceded in death know and understand that he is rejoicing today in the presence of his Lord and Saviour!

Patrick was preceded in death by his parents, and his younger sister Karen Ruth Butler. He is survived by his four children and six grandchildren; Shelly L. Thompson of El Paso, TX (Jacob Probst, Hannah Probst, & Stephen Callaghan); Patrick O. "Chip" Thompson, Jr, of Springfield, MO (Blake McGinnis, William Patrick Thompson, Claire E. Thompson); Joseph M. Thompson, of El Paso, TX; and Rebecca L. Thompson, of Lakewood, CO. He is also survived by his four brothers Michael J. Thompson and family, of Glenpool, OK; Eldon C. "Tommy" Thompson, Jr. and family, of Springfield, MO; Daniel M. Thompson and family, of Augusta, GA; and Douglas M. "Marty" Thompson, of Springfield, MO, step-brother Wayne Mullen and family, of Rogersville, MO. Patrick is also survived by his very special friend Barbara Eversole, of Tulsa, OK.

Services will be held at 11 am Monday, March 17 under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Burial with full military honors will be at 1 pm at Missouri Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 pm - 4 pm Sunday, March 16 in the funeral home.
