Jim Palmer
Jim Palmer was a generous, kind, and humble man ---- a great man and husband. He passed away at his home on January 14, 2017. Jim was born in Trion, Georgia, September 3, 1946 to Martin and Mable Crawford Palmer, both preceding him in death.
After graduating high school in Summerville, Georgia, Jim joined the Air Force and served for 8 years from 1965 to 1973. During that time he served 3 years in Germany, numerous US bases, and 2 tours in VietNam. For his courageous service he was awarded the Bronze Star. He was wounded during a rescue mission while loading a fellow wounded soldier into a helicopter. He earned the distinguished Purple Heart, which he declined to accept because he was a very humble man about service to his country, and said "he was only doing his duty".
He worked as a National sales representative in the industrial cleaning and power washing industry. During his 36 year career he made many lifelong friends across the country.
In 2001 he met and married in 2002, the "love of his life" Carolyn Spurlock McShane. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, of the home, a sister, Cynthia Prince and husband James and children Amanda and Thomas of Wilmington, NC, his children, who he was so proud of, Alan Duckworth and wife Tonie of Willard, MO, Robin Creason and husband Nick of Kansas City, MO, Susie Huneke and husband Dale of Underwood, IA. There are 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Even though he was not the blood father, he was a great father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. There are many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. Everyone loved his unpredictable sense of humor and kind heart.
Besides his family, Jim loved fishing, RVing, and was a wonderful cook famous for his pulled pork and "Shrimp and Grits".
Jim's wife, Carolyn, retired in 2003 and joined him on the road in their motorhome calling on his dealers and enjoying their friendship. In the 6 ½ years prior to Jim's retirement in 2010, work had become a pleasure rather than a chore.
Since his retirement he had quietly and courageously battled the diseases of Agent Orange.
In lieu of flowers, Jim would wish you to shake the hand of a veteran and say "Thank you".
A celebration of Jim's life will be at 4:00 pm, Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Greenlawn Funeral Home North, with a visitation from 3-4 pm, in the funeral home.
