Roy Brown Obituary

ROY BURON BROWN

March 21, 2014

Roy passed away March 21, 2014 in Hospice House at the age of 89. He was born in 1924 in Jasper, Florida and spent the early years of his life in Hawaii and Venice, California. In 1941 at the age of 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy with his Mother's consent. He was assigned to the USS Enterprise, an aircraft carrier stationed in Pearl Harbor. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, his ship was at sea on maneuvers and thus survived the attack. Roy remained on the USS Enterprise throughout the War as the ship went on to take part in all but one major engagement in the Pacific. When the ship returned to Bremerton, Washington for repairs in 1945, Roy and Maxine Scott were married. Roy remained in the Navy, serving aboard the USS Orleck until 1947 when he was discharged with the rank of MM1/C (Machinists Mate First Class) and joined the Naval Reserve.

Roy got a job with Montgomery Ward, a retail and catalog giant at that time, in southern California and in 1951 when the Korean War began he was recalled to active duty and assigned to the USS Woodson. The ship sailed to Newport, Rhode Island and Maxine followed by car. While in Newport, daughter Tawny was born. Soon the Korean War was winding down, his enlistment was up, and in 1952 Roy returned to civilian life and resumed his employment with Montgomery Ward in southern California. Roy spent the next thirty plus years with Wards, having been transferred to the Chicago headquarters in 1966. He retired as National Sales Manager in 1985.

Roy and Maxine moved to the Landings in Fort Myers and have lived here since 1985. He was active in boating, fishing and tennis. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, daughter Tawny Roi Wagner of McHenry, IL, (son-in-law Larry Wagner), brothers Don Brown (Jackie) of Niceville, FL and Pikey Brown of Bullhead, AZ. Roy was a wonderful husband and father, very much loved, and will be greatly missed by family and friends. He was a very private man and, at his request, no service is planned. Roy was at Hospice House when he passed. If you wish to make a donation, please remember Hope Hospice, 9470 Health Park Circle, Fort Myers 33908 — a truly caring place to spend ones last time on this earth.
