Gittis Gosdin Obituary
Gittis Gosdin

January 12, 2014

Gittis Gosdin, 94, passed away Sunday, January 12, 2014 in Johns Creek, GA. He was born on February 22, 1919, in Heard County, GA. Gittis, often just called "Git" by family and friends, was a First Lieutenant, B-17 Pilot in WWII. He flew in the European Theater, operating out of Foggia, Italy. After the war he graduated from University of Georgia with a Master of Science in the College of Agriculture, with a major in Agronomy. It was at UGA that he met Mary Jenkins, the love of his life - they were married on December 19, 1946. They lived together, mainly in Florida, for the next 65 years. After Gittis taught at both Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Cornell University, he went into the Ag-Chemical business and opened his own company, Fort Myers Fertilizer. Gittis and Mary lived and retired in Fort Myers until 2008 when they moved to Atlanta to be close to their daughters.

Gittis was an avid golfer at the Cypress Lake Country Club and had many fun stories to share with the kids and grandkids that are still treasured today. Upon first retiring, Gittis opened his own u-pick farm on land near Fort Myers Beach and grew amazing strawberries and tomatoes. He was known by neighbors for his talent in growing and sharing bananas, oranges, grapefruit, mangos, key limes and pineapples in addition to his beautiful flowering plants. He graced so many lives through his activities, such as serving as a Guardian of the Court in retirement and as a Deacon for the First Baptist Church of Fort Myers for many, many years. He will always be remembered for his large heart, quick wit and humble spirit.

He is survived and very much missed by his two daughters, Kay Snow of Alpharetta, GA and Ann Chandler of Roswell, GA; grandchildren Meghan Klopf, Dana Snow, Chris Hannaford and Mary Margaret Hannaford; and brother, Delmer Gosdin of Franklin, GA.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Fort Myers, 1735 Jackson Street, Fort Myers, FL 33901. Messages of condolence may be sent to the Gosdin Family, in the care of Ann Chandler, 275 Merritt Drive, Roswell, GA 30076.
