Robert Charles Valade



Robert Charles Valade, born April 19, 1926, in Detroit; son of Dr. Cyril K. and Marian Anderson Valade; husband of Gretchen Carhartt Valade; brother of Sara Anne Gushee of Phoenix, Ariz. and Leatrice McKinley of Grosse Pte. Shores, Mich.; father of Gretchen Garth, Mark Valade, and the late Christopher C. Valade; father-in-law of Molly Valade; grandfather of six: Byron, Catherine, Damon, Kyle, Gretchen and Cameron.

Mr. Valade attended St. Paul's School and De LaSalle High School, graduating from Grosse Pte. High School. He attended Miami University of Ohio and Michigan State University. Before he married he worked for Royal Typewriter in Detroit. In 1949 he began working for Carhartt, Inc., and in 1959 became Chairman, President, and C.E.O. In the 1960s he was a member of a United Nations business mission to Brazil through the Young Presidents Organization. He expanded Carhartt Inc. from a $2m company in 1960 to over $300m expected sales in 1998, with 3000 employees. Mr. Valade was known and respected for his highly ethical business practices. His business achievements were many and earned Carhartt Inc. several awards, including the prestigious A.F.C./C.I.O. World Congress Labor/Management Award.

He was a member of the Fiddlesticks Golf Club in Fort Myers, and a member of the Country Club of Detroit, and member and past president of the Detroit Racquet Club.

Memorial Mass Thursday, April 2, 1998, at St. Paul on the Lake Church, 157 Lakeshore Drive, Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. The family will receive friends one half hour prior to service.
