William Sanders Obituary
Fort Myers - In the early evening of February 27, 2021 William (Bill) Willard Sanders closed his ninety years on earth at home, with his beloved and loving wife Joyce and eldest daughter Cathy at his side. His loss is felt not only by his family and friends but by the untold number of people who knew him. During his lifetime Bill was a national recognized, award winning Political Editorial Cartoonist. He was the leader of a Dixieland Jazz band, he was an award winning journalist and published author. He was born on Oct. 14, 1930 and retired to Ft. Myers, FL in 1992. Bill is survived by his wife Joyce Wallace Sanders, his daughters, Cathy (Mark) Johnson (TN), Vicky (Randy) Jungers (CA), Cheryl (Chris) Connell (CT) and Denese (Gus) Sanders-Leonard (CA). He lives in the loving memory of his 11 grandchildren: Justin (Jenny) Johnson, Collin (Faye) Johnson, Nathan (Nancy) Johnson, Brendan (Ashley) Johnson, Kathryn (Justin), Shelby Jungers, Haley Jungers, Riley Jungers, Emma (Andrew) Connell, Emma Strand and Sophia Leonard. He was blessed in his final years with 3 great grandchildren: Moze McGhee, and brand new twins Freya and Jett Johnson. Go now in peace, may the spirit of love surround you, all the way home. Dear Family of Mr Sanders,
I never knew your dear father, but I have a special footnote to his 2016 opinion letter tribute to Maggie, aka Martha Raye. The young guitarist seated next to her is Jim Johnson from Mpls,MN who back home was a founding member of an iconic rock n roll band in MN--The Underbeats--when he was drafted and served in Viet Nam in the 4th Infantry, touring forward Special Forces bunkers with Maggie. Upon his return to MN in 1968, Jim took The Underbeats to California and they transformed themselves into a renowned progressive rock "Gypsy". Jim died in 2019 from esophogeal cancer. I was privileged to call this talented man my friend for over a decade. If you have any other photos that your father Bill took of Jim or Maggie that night, I would be honored to get a copy.
