Wellington Ward Obituary

WELLINGTON WARD

JULY 2, 2016

Local artist Wellington Ward Jr. (Wattie), 81, died Friday, July 1st at his home in South Fort Myers.

He leaves behind his two sons, Sam and Ben, his brother Dickie and many friends.

Born and raised in Norfolk VA, the son of Wellington and Elizabeth Ward, he attended Norview High School and graduated from Virginia Commonweath University with a bachelor's degree in commercial art. He met his late wife of 60 years, Barbara, in elementary school and the two were married in 1956. Barbara preceded Wellington, recently passing away in September. Of note: Wattie died on his late wife Barbara's birthday and Barbara passed away on her son Sam's birthday.

Wattie began a lifelong career in art in the Navy where he became staff illustrator for the Atlantic Fleet. After becoming a civilian, he was employed by the U.S. government, where he became art director for the department of the defense.

In 1967 Wellington moved his family to Fort Myers Florida in order to pursue his dream of becoming a fine artist. Becoming perhaps Southwest Florida's premier visual artist, his work continued to grow in popularity and to this day adorns the homes of many residents in the Fort Myers area as well as those of collectors both nationally and internationally. His particular attention to detail and ability to capture the beauty of Southwest Florida's many waterways and wetlands, endeared him to many.

A memorial service will be held on July 16th at 11:00 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2439 McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to your favorite charity or a written description of your best Wattie Ward story. We're sure there will be enough material for a book … humorous, of course. Info 239-334-4880.
