POMERANTZ - Morton H., Rabbi Dr. Morton H. Pomerantz passed away on Friday, May 2nd after a short illness at the age of 76. The son of Dr. Max Pomerantz and Mrs. Getrude Pomerantz, he attended Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati where he was ordained a rabbi. He was a member and assistant rabbi at Cleveland's Temple TifferethIsrael, led by the late Rabbi Abba Silver. During the Vietnam conflict Rabbi Pomerantz joined the Navy and served as a Marine Corp and Navy Chaplain with the rank of Lieutenant. He served during this time with the late John Cardinal O'Connor, then a Navy Chaplain. After the Navy he served at several congregations in New York State, and became a Chaplain for the State of New York at the Long Island Developmental Center in Melville. He also was active in numerous veterans organizations including the Jewish War Veterans where he served as deputy national chaplain. He was also active member of the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Navy League. Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion awarded him an honorary doctorate on the 25th anniversary for his long public service. Rabbi Pomerantz is survived by his brother Barry Pomerantz of Newton, Massachusetts, and his nephews Noah and Daniel. He is also survived by his cousin Barton Brier of New York and Betty Nichol of Columbus, Ohio. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Rabbi Pomerantz's memory to the charity of the giver's choice. A funeral service will be held at 11AM on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at the Riverside Nassau North Chapel at 55 N. Station Plaza, Great Neck, NY. Burial will follow with military honors at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, NY.
