BERRIDGE - Alice M., 75, of Woodbury, NY formerly of Massapequa, NY, died of lung cancer on June 25, 2011. Born April 11, 1936, in New York, NY, she is the daughter of the late Russell E. and Mary Martell Petersen and was raised in West Hempstead, NY. She is a graduate of West Hempstead High School and Queens College earning a BS in 1958 and an MS in 1961. A retired mathematics Professor from Nassau Community College, Alice joined NCC in 1970 as the first female Mathematics department faculty member, a distinction she held for several more years. At NCC Alice was an active member of NYSMATYC (New York State Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges) and this led to extended service with AMATYC (American Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges) where she was a founding member, editor of the AMATYC Journal and an officer. Alice also served as the President of the Woman's Faculty Association. In addition, Alice served as an oficer and board member of the DSA (Dozenal Society of America) and continued her involvement following her retirement. In 1981, Professor Berridge was honored to earn the prestigious Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, a NYS award for SUNY faculty that had been awarded to only 32 NCC faculty from 1974 until 1981. Alice began her involvement in the 4-H Club and 4-H Camp in 1948. Since that time Alice has served as a club member and leader, camper and counselor, 4-H Division Committee member and Chairperson and has served as Board Member of the Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Nassau County, the umbrella organization for the 4-H. An avid bridge player, Alice earned with her late husband Edmund the national rank of Silver Life Master. Alice also enjoyed reading, the theater, traveling, home and garden projects and bicycling. She was a devoted grandmother to her four grandchildren. Alice was predeceased by her husband Edmund of 50 years. She is srvived by daughter Ann McManus (Gary) of New Canaan, CT and son David (Colleen) of Middletown, NJ; grandchildren Caitlin, Christopher and Brendan McManus of New Canaan, CT and Sophia Berridge of Middletown, NJ; and brother George Petersen of Reno, NV. Memorial visiting will be Friday July 15 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the Beney Funeral Home, Inc. of Syosset, 79 Berry Hill Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the .
