Joseph Bennett Mannis Obituary
On Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019, Joseph Bennett Mannis, loving husband and father of two children, passed away at the age of 74.

Joe was born on one of the most celebrated days of the year, New Year's Day, Jan. 1, 1945 in Knoxville, TN. He was blessed to grow up with two hard-working, funny, kindhearted parents, Joseph and Virginia and two incredibly sweet, fun-loving sisters, Andy and Janine. Joe loved growing up in the mountains of Tennessee.

Joe was not afraid of love. At the age of 23 he married his college sweetheart Carolyn Hoskins. After college, they moved to Charlottesville, VA, where they proudly welcomed their first child, David. A year and a half later, they headed towards the Florida beaches, bought a house in the Cove where they were blessed with their daughter, Suzanne. Joe was the quintessential provider for his family and made sure they were never without.

Joe achieved great success in business, but would rather be remembered for his passion for life. He loved the beach, sports, music, and most of all, the comradery of friends. One of his favorite places was the baseball field where he coached for several years. He had a passion for unique cars and happily drove his red 1953 Ford pickup in the Panama City Christmas parade every winter, kids loaded in the back!

Joe was a longtime member of the St. Andrews United Methodist Church. He was a dedicated usher and always helped in the kitchen for dinners. A church lady once said, "When I pass away, I want to come back as Joe's wife because he cleans the kitchen so well!" His sense of humor, kindness and hard work were unmatched.

Joe enjoyed cooking for his family. Some of his specialties were his homemade pimento cheese, loosely packed hamburger patties, fresh fried grouper and cornbread in buttermilk. He also loved salty peanuts! He enjoyed Carolyn's homemade chicken pot pie so much, he requested it every year for his birthday dinner!

After Joe and Carolyn tragically lost David, like many other couples who have lost a child, they experienced first the death of their child, then the dissolution of their marriage. They went separate ways and the mountains of Joe's home state called him back. He moved to Kingsport, TN, married Brenda Brickey and spent his last ten years in the mountains that he loved.

Joe was preceded in death by his father, Joseph, his mother, Virginia, his son, David, his sister, Janine and his nephew Josh. He is survived by his wife, Brenda, sister, Andy (Brice), daughter, Suzanne (Jason) and granddaughter, Gwendolyn and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club at 218 Bunkers Cove Rd., Panama City, FL 32401 on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020 at 2 o'clock p.m.
