BARTON-UPON-HUMBER, England - Jean C. Stewart, 73, formerly of Northumberland, passed away Jan 8, 2021, at Scunthorpe General Hospital after a short illness.
She was born in Shamokin, March 5, 1947, a daughter of Nicholas and Florence Shebelsky. She was a graduate of Shamokin High School and Pennsylvania State University. Jean had over 27 years professional experience in public administration and worked for the city of Shamokin and then Northumberland County in environmental services.
Jean was very active in Rotary International, becoming the first woman president in the Shamokin Rotary Club and then serving as the first woman District 7370 governor in 1996-97. She later was a member of Sunbury Rotary Club and Hull Paragon Rotary and Gainsborough Rotary Club both in District 1270 in England. It was through Rotary that she met and married the love of her life, Maurice Stewart, and moved to the UK.
Survivors include her husband, Maurice Stewart, brother, Robert, and sister-in- law, Susan Shebelsky, and sister-in-law, Sherri Shebelsky. Jean was a cherished step mum to Sam Stewart and Ruth Leeming and family, a loving aunt to Scott and Jessica Shebelsky and family, Sarah Shebelsky, David Shebelsky, Ryan and Amanda Shebelsky and family, and James and Andrew Shebelsky. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, David Shebelsky.
A private funeral service will be held in the UK at the discretion of family. A celebration of Jean's life, stateside, will be held for family and friends at a later date.
