Talmage Cooley Obituary
Talmage Cooley

Waynesboro - Talmage Newman Cooley of Waynesboro, Virginia, died Friday, August 24, 2018. Talmage, known to friends as "T", was born in Harrisonburg, Virginia, on September 11, 1928, the only child of Harriett Thompson Cooley and Talmage Reherd Cooley. Through his mother, Talmage was a direct descendent of Robert Newman, who in 1609 arrived at the English colony in Jamestown, Virginia. Talmage graduated from Harrisonburg High School, where he was President of his senior class. He then attended the University of Virginia, received a Bachelor of Arts degree, and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. After college Talmage was accepted to the US Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, and during the Korean conflict was stationed at the Port Lyautey naval base on the coast of Morocco. He then was stationed for several years at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. During this time, he met and became engaged to Martha Winder Goldsborough (1933-2013) of Severna Park, Maryland. They were married at St. Anne's Church in Annapolis, Maryland, on May 11, 1957. After their honeymoon, they relocated to Charlottesville, Virginia, where Talmage attended and graduated from the University of Virginia Law School in the class of 1960. Talmage and Martha then moved to Waynesboro, Virginia, where he became an associate, and then partner in the law firm of Edmunds, Freed and Cooley. Later he was a partner in the firm of Cooley, Poindexter, Burns and Marks, also in Waynesboro. In 1984, Talmage was appointed District Court Judge for both Augusta County and the City of Staunton, Virginia. He served in these positions until his retirement in 2001. Beginning in the 1990's, Talmage and his wife Martha studied painting at the Beverly Street Studio School in Staunton, Virginia. They participated in gallery shows and annual group trips to Europe to paint with fellow students and friends. Talmage possessed a spirit full of warmth and mirth, held a great sense of civic duty and was a loyal and caring friend. He and his wife Martha were blessed with a remarkable band of cherished friends who stayed in close contact for almost sixty years, gathering often for joyous celebrations and vacation adventures. Talmage is survived by his three children, Talmage Newman Cooley, Jr., of Brooklyn, New York, John Goldsborough Cooley of Culpeper, Virginia, and Heath Cooley Friedman of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, as well as seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 4pm on Saturday, September 29th, at the University of Virginia Chapel, 145 McCormick Road, Charlottesville, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, gifts to the Beverley Street Studio School, 217 West Beverley Street, Staunton, Virginia, 24401 (bssschool.org/donate/) would be greatly appreciated.
