Anja Elisabeth Moen Obituary
Anja Elisabeth Moen (1954-2015) Anja Moen died Sept. 4, 2015, following a courageous battle with cancer. She died at home in Maplewood, New Jersey, surrounded by family and friends, and passed away peacefully. Anja was born in Oslo, Norway, on Feb. 2, 1954. She lived in Norway until 1989, when she moved to Fairbanks with her family, and then to Maplewood, New Jersey in 1999.
Anja married Knut Stamnes in 1984, and they had two children, Snorre Alfred Moen Stamnes, born in Tromsø, Norway, in 1986, and Kaja Sofie Moen Stamnes, born in Fairbanks in 1988. Anja was educated as a teacher specializing in children with learning disabilities, but she devoted her life and energy to the family, caring for her husband and raising her two children in Norway, Alaska, and New Jersey. Anja was an intelligent, generous, and gentle woman with a great sense of humor. She was also a very outgoing person. She had lots of friends and she spent much time with Sons of Norway in Alaska, serving as its president for several years. She was also an active member of the University Women's Association in Fairbanks. In Maplewood, she was involved with the Ethical Culture Society of Essex County for many years, and served as its President for a term.
Anja was a daughter to writer and editor Arve Moen and Elsa Moen (both deceased), and the sister of Inge Moen, of Oslo, Norway. She is survived by her husband Knut, son Snorre and wife Mengyao and granddaughter Mia of Yorktown, Virginia, daughter Kaja and husband John Elmer of New Orleans, Louisiana, and brother Inge and wife, Eva, of Oslo, Norway.
Anja had a spirit and sense of justice that will live through those she touched. She had a big heart and was very concerned with the less fortunate members of our society. She contributed to several charities including the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, Doctors without Borders, and Southern Poverty Law Center among others. A celebration of Anja's life will be held on Sept. 26 at the Maplewood Club, 489 Ridgewood Rd, Maplewood, NJ, 07040, starting at 5:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her name to Doctors without Borders.
