Danny Lee Gemmill Obituary
Danny Lee Gemmill, 38, beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew and friend, went unexpectedly to our Lord on Nov. 21, 2017. Danny was born June 25, 1979, in Fairbanks to Fannie (Tritt) Gemmill, of Arctic Village (Vashraii K'oo), and his father, Robert Frank Sr., of Venetie. Danny was proud to be of Neets'aii Gwich'in, Vuntut Gwich'in and Han Gwich'in descent.
Danny was a loving, kindhearted, compassionate, strong, carefree, humble, patient, generous, helpful and caring person. He was unique and genuine, truly one of a kind. He was the type of person who would take the shirt off his back to help you if you needed it. A huge loss for our Neets'aii Gwich'in community.
Danny spent his early years between Arctic Village, Venetie and Fairbanks. As a child, he was always taking care of his little brother, Justin. He was very active and sometimes a little rambunctious among his friends.
His favorite role in this life was that of a husband and father. He spent more than half of his young life with his wife, Margorie (Margree). He was a father of four beautiful children. He loved his wife and children dearly; they were his world. He did activities with his children all the time. He taught his sons how to hunt and fish, and he would often take his children swimming in the summer and would build a fire and cook for them as he watched over them.
Danny's occupations were many and of various types, but primarily he was a heavy equipment operator and he really enjoyed operating a front-end loader. He was also an emergency firefighter squad boss, assistant water plant operator and he assisted with building the new Community Washetaria among others.
He truly was a Neets'aii Warrior. He enjoyed fishing immensely since he was a young boy. He would take his brother and friends to the creek and they would spend hours fishing in the summers. Later, he would take his family and friends ice fishing in the winter and spring. He also loved hunting and was a great provider for his family and community. He spent a lot of time on Dachanlee, hunting caribou and camping with his family, and throughout our Gwich'in ancestral homelands, hunting caribou, moose and sheep. For every season, there was always subsistence activities that he was involved in. He also valued our traditional and Gwich'in fiddle dances. He would often be called upon to build the fire at the community hall for our traditional events in the winter season. He lived for his family, our people, our culture and the land. That was his true joy and happiness.
He loved to have fun, and liked game nights with friends and family, and especially radio bingo. He would often announce "Bingo at the Gemmill's" on the radio, as he was also quite lucky. Danny was an avid 49ers fan and he loved Metallica. His nephews and nieces cherished their time with him. Danny had many friends. Everyone that met him always had a kind word to say about him.
Danny is survived by his wife, Margorie Gemmill; his children, Durran, Koyote, Alyssa and little "Hurricane" Charlie; mother, Fannie "Tritt" Gemmill; father, Robert Frank Sr.; in-laws, Charlie and Marion Swaney; siblings, Faith (Duane), Rachel (Ron) Justin. Rockey (Cecelia), Jerrald, Kasey John and Selena Frank; aunties, Mary Rose Gamboa (Manuel) Jessie Tritt Charlie, and Faith Tritt; uncles, Franklin, Raymond, Joel and Joseph Tritt; nephews and nieces, Kimberly Harper, Saundra "Camille" and Daniel Zhuu Gemmill, Phoebe Wiehl, Curtis, Clearance, and Sloan Frank, Airianna, Kiana, Aurora, and Talon Frank, Swan and Taylor Saylor; and his God children, Jerome Christian, Lynnea Frank and Christopher Christian.
Danny had many friends; he was close to Derek Silas, Caide Longknife, Mike Gemmill and Leonard John, as well as Brewster Johnson, Darryl Nikolai, Robert Sam, Mike and Danny Lee, Jonathon John and Jimi John.
He had many, many cousins, too numerous to mention, but loved by him immensely, from Arctic Village, Venetie, Fairbanks, Tetlin, Dawson, Eagle and Whitehorse.
Danny is preceded in death by his grandparents, Abel "Zhuu Tsal" Tritt, Ellen Tritt Cocoran, Nathaniel and Annie Frank; uncle, Daniel "Dinjii" Tritt; great-uncle, Harry David; brother, Robert Frank Jr.; cousins, Robbie Ray and Kimberly Charlie; and childhood best friends, Moses "Little Moe" Sam and Andrew John.
He was cherished and will be truly missed by all. In his own words, he leaves us with this: "Don't worry, I'm here and I'll take care of you."
A visitation is scheduled at 11 a.m. with service at noon Wednesday, Nov. 29 at St. Matthews Episcopal Church. Final burial and potlatch will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, in Arctic Village.
