Obituary Condolences

George Paneak, 60, of Anaktuvuk Pass, passed away on Sept. 19, 2009, at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital after a battle with cancer.

George was the fifth child born to Simon and Susie Paneak. He was born on Feb. 1, 1949, in John River.

George attended high school at Chemawa Bureau of Indian Affairs School in Oregon, where he graduated and earned his private pilot's license. George served for three years in the U.S. Army, including a tour in Germany. 

Though never married, he was a strong role model for many young people. George has served as village coordinator, part-time postmaster, mayor since 2004 and power plant operator, working until the day before his passing.

George was preceded in death by his father, Simon Paneak; his mother, Susie Paneak; his brothers, Robert, Roosevelt, Allan and Harold; and his sisters, Alice and Jenny.

George is survived by his brother, Raymond Paneak; his sister and brother-in-law, Mabel and Bernie Burris; his sisters-in-law, Marie Paneak and Beth Paneak; his nieces, Lela Ahgook, Susan Hugo, Mary Hobart, Betty Kakinya, Lena Kakinya, Louise Yarde, Vicky Monahan, Susie Burris, Stacy Wells and Mariam Paneak; and his nephews, Mark Morry, Terry Burris, Tim Burris, Larry Burris, Micky Paneak, Abe Paneak, Bruce Paneak, James Paneak, Simon Wells and Kyle Wells; and numerous other relatives and friends.

There will be a service for George at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 25, at the high school in Anakuvuk Pass. George will be buried in the Anaktuvuk Pass Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.
