Robert Garbett Obituary
Robert Garbett, a 46-year-old Alaska resident, died Nov. 24, 2012, in Fairbanks.
He was born Aug. 7, 1966, to Emily and Millard Garbett in Richman, Va.
Robert Thomas Garbett enlisted in the Army at age 17, where he was trained as a military personnel specialist. In 1989, while stationed in Vicenza, Italy, he met and married his wife, Ruth. The couple had two children, Stacey Lynn Garbett, and Cindy Lou Garbett (stillborn).
After eight years of service he was honorably discharged so he could pursue a college degree and his greatest joy, to be a stay-at-home father. In 1998, he obtained an associate of arts in business administration from El Paso Community College. He went on to get his bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Texas in El Paso in May 2000.
In July 2004, he and his family moved to Fairbanks, so his wife could complete her last tour of duty in the Army before she retired. He used his degree to obtain employment with military personnel at Fort Wainwright as a GS employee. Following his time at HRC, Rob worked as an administrative specialist for the Garrison Command and later as a training specialist with the Garrison Headquarters Company.
Recently he worked as a human resource specialist for the Soldier Family Assistance Center for the Warrior Transition Battalion B Company. He enjoyed these last few years of being able to give direct care and attention to the wounded soldiers of this company, and in return made many close friends among the soldiers with the unit.
When he was not working, he was spending time enjoying Alaska through fly-in fishing in Minto Flats, four wheeling, camping and hunting. He greatly enjoyed remote controlled vehicles of any sort.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of New York City; his daughter, Stacey, of Fairbanks; his mother, Emily Patricia Braxton Olsen; and stepfather, Don Olsen, of Charlotte, N.C.; his brother, Vernon David Garbett, and sister-in-law, Debbie Garbett of Coats, N.C.; and his sister, Karen Setliff, and nephew, Glen Setliff of Raleigh-Durham, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his father, Millard Robert Garbett; nephew, Parker Setliff, and his daughter, Cindy Lou.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at Northern Lights Chapel, (Bldg. No. 3430) at the intersection of Rhineland and Luzon Avenues, Fort Wainwright.
He will be laid to rest next to Cindy Lou Garbett, on Dec. 17, 2012, at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery.
He was a loving father, a devoted husband, and trustworthy friend to all. He has left a void in our heart that cannot be filled.
Memorial donations in Robert's name can be made to Wounded Warriors Project at https://support.wounded warriorproject.org.
Arrangements were entrusted to Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.
