Walter Glen Zackowitz Jr. Obituary
Walter Glen Zackowitz Jr.

(1934-2019)
Former Fairbanks resident Walter (Zack) Zackowitz passed away peacefully on May 2, 2019, in Sun City, Arizona, with his wife, Barbara, by his side.
Zack was born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota, on Dec. 11, 1934. He attended public schools in Minnesota and California. Later in the Army, he learned to fly and also became a skilled marksman. Subsequently, he moved to Alaska to begin his lifelong career in aviation; first, Wien Air Alaska in Fairbanks and Anchorage, then, Mark Air, and lastly, Alaska Airlines. In 1961, he met the love of his life, Barbara. They married and raised their family of four daughters in Fairbanks and Anchorage. Zack was proud of "his girls" and liked to talk about their latest achievements. In fact, Zack was known to talk about any number of topics of which he had a seemingly unending amount of knowledge. Zack enjoyed everything Alaska had to offer: boating, flying, hunting, fishing, exploring for dinosaur bones, biking, camping up the Salcha River, throwing boomerangs, flying kites, cross country skiing and participating in target archery. After he retired from the Anchorage office of the FAA NTSB in 1993, he and Barbara moved to Sun City West, Arizona, so that he "would never have to shovel snow, again!"
Zack was preceded in death by his parents, Walter G. Zackowitz Sr. and Harriet Dart Zackowitz McKenzie; brother, Lynn Zackowitz; and his daughter, Cindy Zackowitz. He is survived by his daughters, Linda (Don) Ilgenfritz, of Fairbanks, Karen (Bill) West, of Douglas, and Laurie (Lance) Leibole, of Spring, Texas; and grandchildren, Scott (Ivory) Ilgenfritz, of Fairbanks, Emil (Rebecca) West, of Forks, Washington, Nick West, of Los Angeles, and Liana (John) Andrews, of Eagle River; and great-grandchildren, Nicholas Ilgenfritz, of Fairbanks, and Abigail and John Everett Andrews, of Eagle River; niece and nephew, Elaine Fisher, of Castle Rock, Colorado, and John Zackowitz, of California; as well as the Dart families, of Manley Hot Springs.
The family wishes to thank the Hospice of the West, Sun City, Arizona, for their compassionate care and support during his last days. Arrangements were made by Legacy Funeral Home of Sun City, Arizona, in coordination with the Chapel of Chimes, Fairbanks. Letters of condolence for Barbara Zackowitz may be sent in care of Linda Ilgenfritz, 4362 York Ave., Fairbanks, AK 99709. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the .
