Margaret Allen Obituary
Margaret "Peggy" Garren Allen, 76, of 4 Robin Avenue, died Tuesday morning November 1, 2005 at Wake Medical Center North Campus. Peggy was a native of Asheville who came to Wake Forest to attend college. After graduating in 1952, she began serving as the youth minister at Wake Forest Baptist Church. In 1954, she married Robert W. "Bob" Allen, and she joined her husband working at the community newspaper, The Wake Weekly. They worked as a team at the newspaper for 44 years until they sold the paper to their son, Greg. During those years, the newspaper won numerous awards from the N.C. Press Association, and Peggy won the National Newspaper Association's McKinney Award for outstanding newspaper woman of the year. Peggy was active in the community, serving in multiple ways. She was particularly active in the Kiwanis Club and the Wake Forest College Birthplace Society. In 1972, she and her husband were named Wake Forest's Citizens of the year. Her ministry at Wake Forest United Methodist Church was broad, as well. The ministry that excited her the most, though, was teaching children in Sunday School, which she did for more than 30 years. Her family will miss her greatly.
