David Calvin Stokes Obituary
David Calvin Stokes

David Calvin Stokes passed away on July 11, 2018 at Spring Arbor in Greenville.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday at 4 PM in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service.

Calvin was born in Pitt County, graduated from Ayden High School, attended NCSU, and graduated from Atlantic Christian College. After serving in the Korean War from 1953-1955, he attended East Carolina, where he earned a Masters in Education and an Educational Specialist degree.

After college, Calvin was a North Carolina public school principal in Bladen County, Pitt County, Sampson County, and Craven County, at Eleanor Marshall School, and finally at Trent Park Elementary in New Bern, where he served for twenty-six years, and from which he retired after 32 years as an educator.

Calvin was active in community service. Among other awards, he received a 60-year pin from St. John's Masonic Lodge in New Bern and a 30-year pin from The New Bern Civitan Club. He was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Governor Jim Hunt in 1980, and was inducted into the NC Educators' Hall of Fame in 2006. Also, Calvin was a long-time, devoted, and enthusiastic member of the Pirate Club at ECU. He was a faithful member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church, and he especially enjoyed fellowship with friends at Friday prayer breakfasts.

In his retirement, Calvin loved to spend time at his farm on 903 South, Winterville. He liked dirt and seeds and growing things, including collards. He liked to cook, and he liked visiting with friends, and he liked to talk. He had a good memory for names, places, and events. If you met him, he could tell you who you were connected to, and who they were connected to. He never met a stranger. Calvin will be missed.

Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, Callie McRae Stokes and Mabel Jolly Stokes, and by three sisters, Anne Stokes, Winifred Langley, and Christine Barnes, as well as one grandchild, Becky McLawhorn.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Ann Webb Stokes, and by their children, Susan Stokes McLawhorn (Joel) of Wake Forest, David Stokes Jr. (Bambra) of Greenville, and Jessica Ann Stokes of the home. Their grandchildren are Catherine Stokes, Christian Stokes, Maryah Stokes, Richard McLawhorn, Susan McLawhorn, and Joel Patrick McLawhorn, and one great-grandchild, Eli Martin. Also surviving are a brother, Charles Stokes (JoAnn) of Greenville, a cousin, Frances Clarke, of Winterville, and one niece and several nephews.
