James Young Greene, Sr., 85, died Saturday, March 3rd at Carol Woods Retirement Community in Chapel Hill, NC. He was born January 21st, 1933, in Asheville, NC, to James Y. Greene and Myrtle Settle Greene.

Jim attended Asheville High School and Mars Hill College. He was awarded an undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University, an M.Div. from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from UNC-Chapel Hill.

On November 22, 1956, Jim married Judith Church. Jim and Judy left the States in 1961 to spend five years as missionaries in South Korea. Following his return to North Carolina, Jim eventually began what became a twenty-five-year career in Youth and Campus Ministries with the North Carolina Baptist State Convention. After retirement, he put his Ph.D to good use working as a consultant to Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis, IN, and AMPATH, a health care provider in Kenya. He also shared his knowledge and experience as an occasional instructor at Wilkes Community College and Nash Community College. Judy passed away in 2014 and Jim moved to Carol Woods.

Jim is survived by his three children, Jama Greene (Douglas Harrison), Jennifer Greene, and James Greene (Sylvia), as well as four grandchildren, Jordan Harrison, Lenore Harrison, Avery Greene and Donovan Greene, and his much beloved dog, Schneider.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 10, at Binkley Baptist Church in Chapel Hill. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Carol Woods Charitable Fund (750 Weaver Dairy Road, Chapel Hill, NC, 27514) or the Foundation Fighting Blindness (http://www.blindness.org/join-the-fight).
