Jay Hugh Scales Obituary
Jay Hugh Scales

Durham

Jay Hugh Scales, age 89, peacefully transitioned to the spiritual world on Sunday, December 23, 2018 in Durham, North Carolina. One of thirteen children, he was born April 8, 1929 to Henry Thomas Scales and Elizabeth Tilman Scales in Wadesboro, North Carolina.

Jay served his country in both the Army and the Air Force. He met the love of his life, Jean Norris, in 1961. They married in 1969, the same year that he became a member of the Baha'i Faith. His life's commitment was to serve the community and help forge the unity of humanity. Retiring from IBM in 1987, he became a volunteer driver with the Red Cross among many acts of service. Jay was an active member of the United Nations Association of the United States of America.

Jay is survived by Dr. Jean Norris Scales (his beloved wife of 49 years); Thomas Scales (brother); Robert Scales (brother and wife Gladys); Margaret Brown (sister); Willie Crowder (sister); Laurie Scales (sister); Rennett Blair (sister) and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. A special debt of gratitude is extended to Dr. Harvey McMurray, Ms. Sharon Becker and Ms. Mahtaj James for their unwavering support for Jay over the years. Also, thanks to Jay's nieces (Jacqueline Brown and Linda Douglas) for their support during his illness.

A memorial service to celebrate Jay's life will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 1:00 p.m., Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4907 Garrett Road, Durham, North Carolina 27707. All are welcomed!
