Dr. John Lee Frye

Dr. John Lee Frye, 79, of Washington, DC, a native of Huntington, WV and a previous resident of Baltimore, MD, passed away on at his home on Sunday, February 18, 2018. He was born February 15th, 1939, the son of the late Romie Rex Frye and Louise Goff Frye, both natives of Huntington, WV. John graduated from Huntington East High School (1959), Duke University (BA, religion, 1961; MA, education 1963), and University of Maryland, PhD (clinical psychology, 1980) which he practiced until his retirement in 2012. While in high school, he was elected Governor of West Virginia Boys State and President of Boys Nation and won the Kennedy Award for football in 1956. While at Duke University, John played basketball and was a team starter when Duke won its first ACC championship in 1960. He is still ranked in the top 100 all-time basketball scorers at Duke. John enjoyed public speaking, playing and coaching sports, travel, politics, singing and playing guitar. He especially valued spending time with family and friends.

John is preceded in death by his brother Ronald Frye and son Marc Wesley Frye and survived by his partner of 25 years, Anne Page Chiapella; children John (Rima) Frye and Michelle (John) Hanna; grandchildren Royce and Grace Hanna, Jacob, Skylar, Nicholas, and Daniel (Brie) Frye; grandson Takoda Frye; and daughter in-law Vicky Frye (Marc.). He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
