Norman Chambliss Obituary
Norman Y. Chambliss, Jr.

February 17, 1925 - March 9, 2018

Rocky Mount

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race and I have kept the faith. 1 Timothy 4:7

Norman Yates Chambliss, Jr., age 93, died peacefully on Friday March 9, 2018. He was a lifelong resident of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, born February 17, 1925 to Norman Y. Chambliss, Sr. and Julia Barrow Chambliss. He was a much beloved member of the community who faithfully served his country, community, church and family.

During World War II, Norman served as a pilot in the Army Air Corp, later attending North Carolina State College before returning to Rocky Mount where he later became Secretary-Treasurer of D. J. Rose Construction Company. He was a much respected member of the business community and was admired for his honesty and integrity. Among the many organizations he served were his service as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tri-County Industries, Board of Directors of the YMCA, Board of Directors of Citizens Savings Loan (20 years), Head Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 11, Chairman of the Board of the Nash County Department of Social Services, Board of the Rocky Mount Planning & Zoning Commission and President of Benvenue Country Club. He faithfully served his church in many capacities including multiple terms as a Vestry member and Senior Warden of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Rocky Mount and as a member of the board of the Emma S. Anderson Chapel at Topsail Beach, N.C.

For many years, Norman enjoyed time with his family and friends at Topsail Beach where he had a cottage which he always generously shared with others. Many of his great stories were told and retold by him on the back porch of his Topsail Beach home. With the retelling of each story, both the anticipation and the laughter of his admiring listeners grew. Those who loved him the most would ask him to repeat their favorite stories and they laughed as if they had not already heard the story a dozen times before.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Yelverton Chambliss, children Martha Lamm (Wooten), Norman Y. Chambliss, III (Mary Ann), Rochelle Hill (Ned), step-daughter Jennifer Carroll (John) step-son Crayton Yelverton (Bobbi) and bother Mallory Chambliss (Mary). To his nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, he was lovingly known as "Norca". He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph B. Chambliss and his best friend, J. Claude Mayo Jr.

A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Church of the Good Shepherd, 231 N. Church Street, Rocky Mount with the Rev. Matthew Johnson officiating. A Reception with the family will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall of Church of the Good Shepherd. Immediately following the reception, the service will conclude with a burial at Pineview Cemetery. Friends are welcome and encouraged to join the family for the committal service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Norman's honor to the Church of the Good Shepherd or to a .
