Paul Adrian Nickel, PhD., passed away peacefully on December 10th, 2010, surrounded by his five loving children. Paul Sr. was born in Philadelphia to Rudolph and Elizabeth Nickel. After serving in WWII, he was educated at Brown University, NYU, Stanford, and then received his PhD in mathematics from UCLA. While teaching at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana, he was active in coaching little league and shuttling children to the ski slope. Summers were spent working for Boeing in Seattle. 1965 brought a move to Raleigh, where he was a full time professor in the Mathematics Department at NC State. His hobbies included running at Shelly Lake, spending summers at Schroon Lake, NY, and analyzing the stock and bond market. He is survived by his sweet wife of 63 years, Virginia “Ina” Nickel, three sons Paul Jr and his wife Tara of Rochester, Bill and his wife Jane of Fairfax, Glen and his wife Diana of Cary, and two daughters Lori Harrelson and her husband Chuck and Ginger Smiley both of Raleigh. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Dr. Joshi and the ICU nursing team for their compassionate care at Duke Raleigh. Our Dad would also like to thank Sunrise of Raleigh for the loving care of his wife. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Dear loved ones of Paul.

Although I have lost track of you since Paul's retirement I have thought of you often. I sometimes would see Paul running at Shelley when he was able to do so. As a fellow runner we had that in common. Paul, Ray Struble and I carpooled together during a gasoline crisis in the past. I am sad to hear of his passing.
