William Monk Obituary

William Cabot Monk

Farmville

William Cabot Monk (Bill) died at his home in Farmville, N.C. on November 11, 2016. Bill died as he lived his life, peacefully and gently. Born on August 7, 1926 in Farmville, Bill celebrated his 90th birthday this summer amongst many friends of all ages at his beloved Atlantic Beach.

A graduate of Woodberry Forest School, Bill was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, returning to graduate from the University of North Carolina where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Upon graduation, he went to work for the family tobacco processing business, A.C. Monk and Company in Farmville, and later married long time sweetheart, Agnes Quinerly Monk.

Known for the twinkle in his eye, unending kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity, Bill was the definition of a true gentleman whose passions were his family and his business. He was a devoted husband, father, son, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, always placing others before himself. In business, he helped run the company that his father started, A.C. Monk and Company, alongside his two brothers, Coy and Robert. Together, they built the company into a successful enterprise where he enjoyed building meaningful relationships and friendships worldwide.

Philanthropy was also a top priority for Bill who made a difference in his humble way both because of a deep interest and a civic responsibility. He was dedicated to numerous causes and organizations particularly in his hometown of Farmville, eastern North Carolina and a number of educational institutions and their programs. Everyone and everything that were involved with Bill were bettered because of his quiet generosity. In his personal life, Bill was a modern Renaissance man, with a wide variety of interests including boating, flying, reading, technology, art and travel among many things.

Bill is survived by daughter Molly Monk Mears and her husband, John Barry Mears, of Atlanta; son William Cabot Monk Jr., and his wife, Aurelia Stafford Monk, of Greenville; and four grandchildren, William Cabot Monk III, Aurelia Stafford Monk, Emily Monk Mears, and John Barry Mears, Jr.; nephews and nieces Albert Coy Monk III, Linda Monk Page and her husband, William S. Page, Jr., Emily Monk Davidson, and Robert Turnage Monk Jr. and his wife, Suellen Grimes Monk along with many great nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased in death by his mother, Emily Turnage Monk; father, Albert Coy Monk; and brothers, Albert Coy Monk, Jr and Robert Turnage Monk. Additionally, Bill and his family held a special love for his "extended family," caretakers Angela Battle, William Hart, Diane Byrd, along with Robert Parker, Carolyn Suggs, Nellie Green, and Tommy Phillips.

A funeral service will be held at Farmville United Methodist Church, Sunday, November 13 at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Hollywood Cemetery. The family will welcome friends and family afterwards in their home at 4328 W. Church Street, Farmville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Farmville United Methodist Church, PO Box 153, Farmville, NC 27828; or Woodberry Forest School, 898 Woodberry Forest Road, Woodberry Forest, Virginia 22989. Bill's gentle spirit, thoughtfulness and wisdom will be missed by all of us who knew him. Our deepest sympathies to his greatest love...family. May you find peace during this sad and difficult time but also some comfort in knowing he will be remembered by all that had the privilege and honor of enjoying his company.
