Robert Gerald Dennis, 74, died on December 1, 2017. Born in Greenwood, SC on June 8, 1943, he was the son of Robert Zack and Helen Balentine Dennis. Mr. Dennis grew up in West Columbia and graduated from the University of South Carolina. He lived in Sumter,SC for many years where he was the librarian at Sumter High School. After retirement he moved to Raleigh, NC, and worked at the Green Road Community Library until September of this year. Surviving him are a brother John Carl Dennis of Spartanburg, SC and a sister, the Reverend Beverly D. Alexander of Raleigh, as well as aunts, uncles, and many cousins.
While in Sumter, he was a long time member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter and later Pullen Memorial Baptist Church in Raleigh. He loved music, art, and nature and had an abiding sympathy for the poor. Memorials would be welcome to any charity that serves the poor, the sick, the hungry, the homeless, the immigrant, or the refugee. Notifications should be sent to John Dennis, 104 Stribling Circle, Spartanburg, SC, 29301.
A private committal is planned for a later date.

To the Dennis Family,
I have never met a more gentle spirited man. Mr. Dennis was the kindest gentleman I've known in a long while. We often enjoyed conversations of our family and living "in the country". He would share his experiences of travel in Europe to see the cathedrals and other historic places.
Although somewhat expected, I am deeply saddened by his death. We shall miss him and his bright smile and gentle spirit.
