Family and friends mourn the death of Jane Weber Smith who died on July 17th, 2015. Born in St. Louis, 1921, Jane was a long time resident of Atherton, California, where she and Charles, her husband for 50 years, raised five children. In recent years, Jane lived in Santa Barbara. A Stanford graduate, Class of '43, she was a lover of history, bridge, travel, and gardening. She had a lifetime association with Stanford, as well as the Hoover Institute, that included countless international trips sponsored by the University. These far flung itineraries fed Jane's curious mind and nourished her appetite for history. Her only regret was she never made it to the Gobi Desert. She is survived by her five children: Marcia and her husband Dick Bourain in Santa Barbara; Sara and her husband, Lynn Zieske, in Livermore; Michael Smith in Sebastopol; Leslie Adler in Madrid, New Mexico; Eric Smith and his wife, Jacqueline, in Albuquerque. Jane had seven grandchildren, with a great granddaughter expected to arrive any day. A funeral will be held Aug. 28, 10:30 am, at San Roque church in Santa Barbara followed by a reception at Valle Verde at 3:30.

You are in God's loving care now dear Jane. You were one of the very few persons in my life who showed me authentic kindness, support, respect, and treated me thus. I'll forever be mindful of your presence in my life and know I'm but one of many, many people who have been blessed by your example, your humor, strength, and indomitable spirit.
Lovingly,
Paul Tally

A brilliant and kind woman. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to meet her through her daughter Marcia. My thoughts and prayers are with Jane's family and friends.
