George W. Walberg Sr.
George W. Walberg Sr. of Washington, CT, passed away on May 20, 2017 at New Milford Hospital. He was born in New Preston on September 23, 1928 to Harold and Edith (Ward) Walberg.
He attended schools in Washington and New Milford. After finishing his education, George joined the Merchant Marines to see the world and traveled extensively throughout Europe. In 1951, he was drafted into the Korean War. George became an Army Ranger and rose to the rank of Master Sergeant, earning numerous recognitions. Upon his return to Connecticut, he trained as a stonemason and started his own business. In 1954, he married Barbara Beeman Beers and they embarked on a loving and memorable journey. They had three children and established local businesses in downtown New Milford. Their passion for antiques led them to open The Red Barn Antiques where they bought, sold, traded and restored early American furniture and collectibles.
His love of nature and the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, prompted George and Barbara to open the The Good Sport in 1971. George was a fixture on Bank Street for over 40 years and loved meeting people and sharing his wonderful sense of humor.
Upon his retirement from the business at the age of 84, he spent many hours in his woodworking shop and enjoying his family. A master fine woodworker and avid reader, George was especially known for his quick wit and impassioned storytelling. He will be dearly missed by his family and all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Barbara; children George Walberg Jr. (Robin) of New Milford, CT, Nancy (Bob) Morlino of Pawlet, VT and Marilyn Walberg of Washington, CT; five grandchildren Ashley (Derek) Broman of Salem, OR, Taryn and Carissa Walberg of Southbury, CT, Robert Morlino of Santa Fe, NM and Lauren Morlino of Burlington, VT; siblings Elliot (John) Walberg of Brookfield, CT and Evelyn Luczak of Danbury, CT and numerous nieces and nephews.
