I was so saddened to hear of Fr. Merry’s passing, I had the pleasure of meeting him at Pope John Paul when my father was there, he also officiated my fathers funeral. My fondest memory of Fr. Paul I will never forget, I was at Pope John Paul, he was giving out communion to the residents, he asked me if I’d like to receive, I told him I hadn’t been to confession in awhile, next thing I know I was sitting in a library room giving my confession, pouring my heart out to this priest I had just met! Well let me tell you, he made me feel like I’d known him my whole life! He was a gem and Heaven is shining more brightly because of him.....May you RIP Father, say hello to John and thank you for listening to me♥

I was going to school in Rome when Paul was in the seminary. My friends and I shared the stage with him at The North American College of Priests for a presentation of THE ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT, THE SMELL OF THE CROWD. One of the happiest outgoing guys I ever met. Sail on, Sailor.

Father Merry man of honesty, integrity, devotion and compassion. Anyone who came in contact with him immediately recognized his sincerity. They were not only talking to a man of God but also a friend. He had those rare qualities you look for in others but seldom find. My first recollection of Father Merry was in 1972 when I was seven. Our family just moved from Brooklyn, NY to Connecticut. My Mom called St. James Rectory and asked if a Priest could come to the house and do a Blessing. Two days later Father Merry arrived and asked my Mom if he could celebrate a Mass with our family instead. My Mom recognizing this as a gesture of emmence kindness obviously agreed. I remember Mom slicing up small pieces of bread to be used for Communion. I remember him blessing our house and giving his blessing on our entire family. We all saw this as something very special. I could go on and on with stories of his acts of kindness toward others as my Parishioners could do as well. Though he was a man of small stature, he was a “Giant” with a big heart with those who came in contact with him. It never ceases to amaze me how “one life” can have such a “positive effect” on so many other lives. I would like to thank the Merry Family for sharing him with all of us. Though he may be gone, he lives on in our hearts and minds in the cherished memories of one who was “there” when it really counted. Thank You.

What a lovely man he was! He officiated at my late MIL's funeral in 2004 at St Ann Church Devon Ct and he was such a great person! I recall tripping in King's Highway cemetery at the burial and he caught my arm and prevented me from falling on my face! Thank you again, Father Merry!

Father Paul Merry was a true gift to all of us. He is a radiant star that will always be present in our hearts. A priest of great faith.
Father Merry always took the time to stop and listen and truly listen to what we had to say, whether it was a request for prayers, advice, or a thank you for his comforting and never ending compassion for his flock. During these challenging times, God certainly needs Father Merry in Heaven. God Bless you Father Merry. May your presence in Heaven increase our vocations on earth.

Paul was my cousin and my first and oldest friend. We spent our early years, inseparably, in Springdale. I was fortunate to have been able to be at his ordination in Rome as he began on his chosen path.
Paul was a blessing to our family and to those whose lives he touched.
I regret I cant be physically present with family and friends to say a final goodbye.
Paul, you will be sorely missed.

Father Merry was a real down to earth Priest. Loaned to us fro God. By looking at his face and big smile would want someone to tell him anything and would get consolation immediately. He was the best example of a priest that I ever met. May you always be with us and the angels surrounding you Dear Father Merry.

I met Fr. Paul at SHU in the 70s. I remember him telling the folk group at Mass that he didn't sing that well but he sang with passion. One of his favorite hymns was "Earthen Vessels," which he sang with that passion and enthusiasm and with that smile! I will forever remember his kindness and encouragement during my Cursillo weekend....after going through a very terrible divorce... he was a guiding light that weekend. To Brian, Richard and his family, may you take comfort in the fact that Fr. Paul is now resting in the arms of his Lord - not in pain any longer - and after completing his earthly ministry, having a well deserved rest. Fr. Merry - you will forever be remembered by myself and so, so many others. Rest in peace.

Richard and Brian,

It was with sadness that we learned of Father Pauls passing. The Pietka family holds a special place in our hearts for your brother as he concelebrated JoAnns memorial service back in 1999. He brought light and joy to a difficult time.
Praying for you both, as well as family and friends. There is not a doubt in my mind God opened His arms as Paul entered heaven, saying Welcome Home, my good and faithful servant.

Fr. Merry was the most "priestly" priest we ever had the honor of knowing. We have said many times, "Fr. Merry is Jesus Christ here on earth!" We are so very fortunate that he served at St. James church in Stratford when we were there in the early 1970's. Our 3 sons were students at St. James School and always brought home beautiful stories about him when they served his Masses as altarboys. We lost our son, Kevin, in an auto accident in July, 1988 when he was only 24 years old.. We had moved to Trumbull & were parishioners at St. Stephen's at the time. He was there visiting and when we mentioned that we had had thunderstorms every day since he died, Fr. Merry, in his infinite wisdom said, "Did you ever think that it was applause that he got into heaven?" What beautiful & consoling words to say to us! Only Fr. Merry would think like that -- we are so blessed to have known such a saintly man -- & indeed so very privileged to have him share his loving heart with us. We will never forget our beloved Fr. Merry -- he will always be in our hearts and prayers! Thank you, God, for sending him to us!!

Father, I heard you say Mass at St. Heart back in 1978. I was so taken by your eloquence delivering Mass and your sermons, I asked you to perform my marriage ceremony. You were and are an inspiration to me. It was because of you that this lost sheep found her way back to Jesus fold. Thank you for inspiring me and Im sure many, many others. I know there is a very special place in Gods kingdom for you. May you rest in Gods love. With much fondness,

In his early days, we Brothers of Sigma Psi Delta Fraternity had Fr. Paul served as our spiritual advisor during his time at Sacred Heart University. He had a great sense of humor and went along willingly as we played tricks on our pledges. But he never lost his reason for being who he was. It was a pleasure to know him during that time.

So very sorry Family and Friends. Heartache finding Father Paul Merry has passed away. My first thought, what an incredible selfless, sacrificing wonderful Holy Priest. I alone could of written five pages regarding the service and suffering I witnessed the few years I was blessed knowing him. His great love for Jesus and Our Blessed Mother showed in his priestly duties tending the flock. Father was sickly and suffered much most of the time, yet that smile never faded. We will all miss him. Trust Jesus, Father Paul Merry is continuing praying, interceding for those in this world. Eternal rest and Thy perpetual light shine on and through this chosen Soul, oh Lord. Amen

Father Merry was the most kindest priest I knew. I would look forward to talking to him when I went to confession. It was a one-on-one conversation with God. I also had a wonderful calming feeling when I left from talking to him. He was raised in Stamford by wonderful parents. His brother, Richard, went to school with my brother at St Marys. We would reminisce the old days in Stamford. I told him he was always in my prayers. I know God received him with open arms and he is watching over us. He will be dearly missed. I was blessed to know him.

I am saddened to hear that Father Paul Merry has passed on - gone to be with the Lord. He was the smiling, encouraging, young priest at St. James from 1972 to 1976. He SANG the Lords Prayer at mass. He was also a good listener and a regular guy who played basketball at the hoops outside. He spoke with you at your level. He was always sincere as he did Gods work. He walked what he talked. Well see him on the other side.
