Robert J. Lytle, Jr., age 42 of New Milford, tragically took his own life on July 12, 2010 at his home after suffering silently from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder since his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army as a sergeant in 1993. Rob was a combat war veteran of Operations Just Cause and Desert Storm. While his family and friends may never fully understand Rob's pain or all of the circumstances involving Rob's passing, we do know that he loved his family above all else, Lori-Ann, his wife of 12 years; his beloved son, Alexander John, 10, and his cherished (and ridiculously pampered) dogs, Foster and Max. Rob was a graduate of Brewster, N.Y. High School and the U.S Army Military Police School. During his Army tenure, Rob served with the 411th MP Co., 720th MP BN in the Emirate of Kuwait as a member of Task Force Freedom earning the Kuwait Liberation Medal. He participated in the Joint Task Force - GTMO, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, earning a Humanitarian Service Medal and as a member of Joint Task Force South in Operation Just Cause, Panama. Rob was especially proud to have been awarded The Army Commendation Medal in 1992 for exceptionally meritorious service as a member of the 411th MP Co., Fort Hood, TX . An avid fan of the Military History Channel, he was honored to have fought to secure the freedoms Americans enjoy. After leaving the Army, Rob pursued a career in the U.S. Bureau of Prisons where he achieved Honor Graduate status in 1993. Rob worked at MCC New York, FCI Waseca, Minn., MDC Brooklyn and FCI Danbury. He truly loved his work and his BOP family and was thrilled to have been recently promoted to lieutenant at FCI Danbury. His time there was far too short. Rob's wife owes a special debt of gratitude to the inmates incarcerated at FCI Danbury in 1994 as they played matchmaker and convinced Rob to ask her out on a date In his free time Rob enjoyed spending time at the local VFW reminiscing and riding his Harley Davidson. People devastated and mourning his loss include his parents, Robert and Geraldine Lytle of Danbury; his siblings and their spouses, Jennifer Vuolo and her husband, Edward of Brewster, NY, Sean Lytle and his wife, Gina of New Canaan, and Aileen DeVeaugh and her husband Jon of Waterbury; his in-laws, George and Helen Lalak of Bridgewater, as well as several nieces and nephews and many, many other extended family members, friends, neighbors and co-workers. The family will receive friends in the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford, on Sunday, July 18th from 4 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Francis Xavier Church in New Milford on Monday, July 19th at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery, New Milford. In lieu of flowers, Rob's wife is suggesting that donations be made in Rob's honor and memory to the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust, 3725 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, KY 41076. This non-profit group provides services to veterans with PTSD.

Remembering you with the best of memories. You are so missed your dry humor and quick wit with your jokes. As bad as those jokes were you made us laugh. Hope the peace and freedom you so need has been attained. Your friend here misses your company and advice.

December 25, 2010
Rob John,
We missed you very much yesterday as I know everyone had thoughts and memories of you going through their minds all day. It was an emotional day for all of us knowing that you weren't there to make us laugh or tell a story which you probably told before :), but we felt the warmth of your spirit around us. We love you very much and miss you even more. Not a day goes by that I don't think about my big Brother and the memories we had shared.

On this Christmas Day, I hope Lori-Ann, Alex and our family are comforted by your love and protection you have always provided us. It will be a hard day for all, so I ask all of you reading this to think of one nice memory that you had with my Brother and say a prayer. Hopefully he will hear your prayers and these will be his Christmas gifts on this special day.

I love you Rob and miss you very much.

Your little Brother,

December 24, 2010
There will be an empty chair at the holiday table from now on, but it will be filled with loving memories.

There still isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about you or now have a one way conversation with you in the car on the way home from work.

I do find comfort though, with your new form of communication...whether you are in my dreams or your birthday constantly comes up in my NY & CT lotto games. Very funny Rob! I love and miss you very much.

Many, Many thanks to all of our family and friends who have made this Holiday season tolerable. Your phone calls and notes describing your happy memories of Rob have lifted Alex's and my spirit -- Which is what Rob would have wanted. Alex and I only get through each day because we know that Rob is with us in spirit; protecting us and guiding us. Whenever I am feeling overwhelmed and down, Alex is quick to remind me that Dad is still with us, loves us and wants us to be happy and celebrate his life. So, even though the thought of spending Christmas and New Year's Eve without Rob is unbearable at times; I will get through it by honoring the memory of the man I love with all of my heart and soul by continuing to share my own memories of Rob with everyone and to never let his spirit die or be forgotten. Please keep Rob in your thoughts and prayers and continue to share your memories with us.

We love you, Rob. Alex purchased a Luminary which will be lit in your memory at Church on Christmas Eve.... may its light reach you in heaven and may its warmth comfort your spirit, reminding you how very much you are loved.

To my soul-mate, best friend and truly adored husband:

Our story is ours and ours alone - not to tell on a public web-site. You were my World and are my Everything and I am devestated by your absence. "'Til death do us part..." came much, much too quickly. I pray daily that you have found the peace of mind and spirit that eluded you in this life. I miss you more than words can say and look forward to being reunited with you again ~ You will forever remain my "Love Muffin".

There hasn't been a day that has gone by, that I haven't thought about you, Rob. I think you've taken for granted how loved and respected you were, and not just by your family. I feel like a piece of me died on July 12. I will most miss our conversations and the holidays. But I do know that when I pass, you'll be waiting there on the other side up in Heaven. I just wanted to say that you were a great officer to work with. In the over 10 years that I have known you in MDC Brooklyn I don't think that I can remember you without a smile. You treated everyone the same which is a rare quality knowadays. I remember how happy you were when you got your promotion and transfer, I felt that Brooklyn was losing and Danbury was gaining a great wealth of knowledge.
To the Lytle family I am so sorry for your loss, especially to your wife and son... I hope that you are at peace...God Bless!

To the Family & Friends,

Rob will be truly missed. Although I had not seen or talked to Rob in 20 years; it's hard to forget his smile and his ability to make others laugh and smile, even in bad situations. Take comfort in knowing that Rob secured his place in heaven 20 years ago, while serving his country with honor and bravery.

God bless Rob and his Family.

As I look back and remember your smiling grin
It seemed to grow smaller and the light seemed to dim
I mistook it as something other than that
And paid it no mind, I am sorry we did not chat

I am sorry I did not discern
What I see now, was the pain in your heart
Oh Lord, I pray, give us the grace to learn

Lord, give us wisdom to discern what is truth
To help those who are hurting
And to love them like you.

When Rob first came to Danbury back in 1994, we worked as officers together. I remember him laughing and joking around and he would always have that smiling grin and when we passed by each other at work he would always say “Hey George.”

When Rob returned last year, he did not miss a beat. Every time Rob would pass me at work, he would always look at me with that smiling grin and say "Hey George."

I will remember this as a gift from God and my memory of Rob is, a humble man with a sensitive heart, who always wanted to spread joy in people's lives.

I pray that the peace of God which passes our human understanding guard your hearts, minds and souls at this most sorrowful time.

Rob John,
No words can even describe how much I will miss you. You have always been my protector and best friend. There are few people in this world that make me laugh and you were at the top of the list. We always had great times together and it hurts me to know that we will never be able to sit down together and laugh again. You were a great brother and just a kind soul to every heart you touched. I'm sure God is getting an earful right now about some Star Trek episode you're talking about as I write this. All I can say is that your loving Sister wrote the most wonderful eulogy that will be read by her on Monday and it will make you proud. I have never read something that beautiful and I thank her sooooooooo much for taking the time to make you proud.

I love you more than words can even describe.
