Jeffrey Golub-Evans Obituary

Golub-Evans, Dr. Jeffrey
Dr. Jeffrey Golub-Evans, founder and Director of the New York Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, died Thursday at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. He was 72.
Described as a Renaissance Man by his friends and colleagues, Jeff's passion for arts, culture, and travel instilled his professional work with extraordinary depth. His joie de vivre and legendary storytelling ability made him a much-loved figure in the lives of thousands.
Although widely sought after for his smile artistry, Jeff always found time for his family, his friends, and his delighted activities: sculpting, hiking, kayaking, yoga, concerts, and theatre. In addition, he was a celebrated mixed-media artist and printmaker with paintings in galleries in New York City and abroad.
Born in NYC on May 2, 1941, Jeffrey was the son of artist Eva Brown and attorney Irving Golub. A 1963 graduate of Hamilton College, he spoke French fluently and spent his final year of college in Paris studying French literature, his major. In 1966, Jeff received a degree from NYU College of Dentistry.
Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the Army and participated in a dental training rotation at Walter Reed Army Hospital, gaining tremendous experience in all areas of dentistry including crown and bridge, oral surgery, and endodontics. He subsequently spent a year in Vietnam as a MASH unit team member as well as running his own dental clinic.
After returning, he began his private dental practice at 57 E. 72nd St., later moving to 128 E. 71st St., the Dental Duplex. In 1975, Jeff married Laine Jastram and had two children with her, Kristina and Chad.
Dr. Jeffrey Golub-Evans parlayed his artistic talents into becoming one of the most revered cosmetic dentists in the country replete with a celebrity clientele. Vogue Magazine famously lauded Dr. Golub-Evans as the "Guru of Cosmetic Dentistry." He was invited to travel the world to teach his brand of high-art cosmetic dentistry utilizing the latest bonding and veneer technologies. In collaboration with his artistic sensibilities, he created a new genre of cosmetic dentistry called "smile design." In addition, Dr. Golub-Evans created dental costuming for Broadway and Hollywood productions.
Dr. Jeff was Past President of the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) and was founding president of the New York Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. AACD co-founder Dr. Morley said, "He was admired and loved by many. Jeff's contribution to the development and 'soul' of the AACD is immeasurable and transcends his many accomplishments."
In 2001, Jeff Golub-Evans married Alecia Adams and took residence in Warren, CT, where they raised their daughter, Eva. This beautiful property and new community became his sanctuary.
A dedicated, doting father who lived life to the fullest, he and his family could be found enjoying Knicks games, Tanglewood in the Berkshires, Jazz Fest in New Orleans, and dancing at Midsummer Night's Swing at Lincoln Center.
Jeff will be sorely missed by us all.
His funeral will be held on Sunday, August 4th at 3PM at the First Congregational Church, 6 Kirby Rd, Washington, CT. A memorial service will be held in Manhattan in the coming weeks. Details will be posted on the website http://www.facebook.com/drjeffgolubevans

I was the staff account for Dr. Golub's CPA and visited the Dental Duplex monthly in the 1980s. He was one of a kind, a genuine human being. I remember that he had long hair at that time and posters of rock artists in his office. RIP Dr. Golub.

I was his patient months before his death. Over the two months that he transformed my smile, we talked about everything - his kids and his wonderful wife along with Philip Roth, Shirley MacClaine and Downtown Abbey. I relaxed and enjoyed every visit. He was gentle and patient and didn't balk when I wanted something re-done. He just did it and perfectly. Given the skill he showed towards me I had no idea that he was even sick. He was truly an example of dedication and courage in the face of bad odds. I will remember him for that.

So sad to hear of his passing. What happened?? He was truly the best dentist in the whole world because he combined science with art, and he was an amazing and highly talented artist! I cherish his painting that is hanging on my wall every day. He was also an amazing human being who brought joy to everyone he met! During my 20 years as his patient, he once treated me while my chihuahua was sitting on my chest watching him..He'll be missed forever. My sincerest condolences to his family.

I met Dr. Jeff Golub-Evans last fall when he worked on me over several months. Each visit, he noted what book I carried in and asked me about it. In return, he shared his favorites with me.

I admired the way he treated his whole staff with such care and consideration - almost like they were part of a large extended family. So rare to see this!

He was such an engaging and vital man that I truly shocked to learn to his passing. This life was way to short, in my opinion.
But I have no doubt that he cramed everything that was truly important into it because he really did put people first.

What I haven't drawn, I have never really seen & when I start drawing an ordinary thing I realize how extraordinary it truly is. All is worthy of being seen, of being drawn; especially its portrait, even that of the stranger as we were when I 1st tried to sketch him from w/in a gathering so many yrs ago.
"Behold the lilies of the field and see how they grow, their fading I share"!
Jeff will be missed my many of us dental/artist who had seen him only around AACD events, but in his glory. An a artistic & passionate gentleman indeed.

Sometimes when friends leave us, they fade in the memory. Not Jeff - he will be with us - always - in technicolour. Jeff was the loveliest and most interesting man I ever had the good fortune to meet, some 22 years ago. His talents were endless: a gifted multi-media artist; a brilliant and innovative cosmetic dentist; an accomplished linguist, a patient teacher, a loving family man and the best friend one could ever hope for. He had the unique ability to make everyone feel better about themselves. His generosity of spirit knew no bounds and his infinite energy and enthusiasm were infectious. Whatever his endeavour, he accomplished it with style and panache. One could only feel uplifted in his company. He always had something positive to say, whether by way of a sincere and thoughtful compliment or an encouraging word for whatever life had thrown one's way. His life was crammed full but he always found the time to stay in touch. Jeff was my best friend and I will miss him dearly. My heartfelt thoughts and kind wishes to his family and friends who loved him too.

Jeff has been a friend and my mentor in cosmetic dentistry ever since I can remember. He truly took the Art of Cosmetic Dentisty to new heights .... From which dentists and patients learned and benefited.
I remember, as a young dentist, sitting in the first row of every continuing education course he ever gave, savoring each and every word and concept. He was one of the first in our profession to "look at the patient and to 'design ' a smile complimentary to their unique looks" ... A concept I adopted in my work and think of him and his infamous words each and every day that I practice!
I tell my patients the story of the talented (understatement!) dentist/ artist who I know who designed the amazing statuette for the AACD .
I will truly miss you Jeff, but your influence in the world of dentistry will become history!

What a loss - of a truly great man. I was fortunate enough to a patient, and like many, became a friend. His positive energy and joie de vivre were infectious, and influenced me far beyond the dental chair. I'm still in wonder of all that he seemed to accomplish on a daily basis.

The first thought that comes to my mind was the epitaph, published on the cover issue of Forbes Magazine upon the passing of the late Malcolm Forbes: "While he lived - he lived!"

I feel lucky to have known him.
