Roberta Evalyn Hill

Roberta Evalyn Hill, 93, of Phoenix, AZ, formerly of Newell, IA, passed away quietly on Friday afternoon, June 1, 2018.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, September 17, 2018, at the Desert Garden United Church of Christ in Sun City West, AZ, for family and friends.
Roberta was born on November 10, 1924, to Robert Wesley Henderson, M.D., and Eva May McCredie Henderson (teacher) in Bismarck, ND.
She graduated high school on May 22, 1942, and enrolled at the University of Iowa, obtaining her Bachelor of Arts degree on June 8, 1946. While enrolled in graduate school, she met Gilbert Dean Hill, recently discharged from the army who was completing his degree. On August 21, 1947, the young couple were married in her parents' home.
The couple moved to Newell, IA, where Gilbert was employed. After their four children were grown, Roberta opened a travel agency, Orange Tree Travel, and enjoyed working with people on their vacations and taking groups on tours. She and Gilbert began traveling world-wide.
In their later years, the couple moved to Sun City West, AZ, where they enjoyed working on their house and continuing to travel. Roberta and Gilbert were married for over 65 years until she was widowed in October, 2012.
Roberta enjoyed many activities during her lifetime. Throughout her childhood, she and her parents regularly ice skated. In Iowa, she loved skating down the frozen creek behind her house dressed in her dark purple skating outfit, with her feet flying. Music was also a passion. She grew up playing the piano and clarinet. At University of Iowa, she marched and played a bagpipe in the Scottish Highlanders. After she was married, she owned and played both a piano and organ for many years. She loved golfing, swimming, and dressing stylishly with a matching tiny purse.
She was a 71-year member of Eastern Star and a long-time member of the Congregational UCC in Newell and the Desert Garden UCC in Sun City West.
To Roberta, her family was top priority. She is mourned by her children, Julie, Timothy and Lucinda (Tony); her grandchildren, Joy (Matt) and Hope; and her great-grandchildren, Hannah, Peter, and Abigail. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and oldest son Brian.
