Wesley Richard Channell Jr.

Wesley Richard Channell Jr., 70, Sun City West, AZ, passed away Monday, August 6, 2018 at his home in Sun City West, AZ. Born in Lawrence, KS on December 31, 1947 to Wesley Richard Channell Sr. and Doris Louise Nieweg, Wes was the eldest of four children, and grew up in Kansas City, KS, and graduated Argentine High School in KCKS (Class of 1965). He received his Bachelor, Masters, and Doctorate degrees from the University of Kansas.
Wes was a Vietnam War veteran (US Army).
Professionally, Wes was in higher education administration: Provost at Park College (Kansas City, MO); Vice President of Western Nebraska Community College (Scottsbluff, NE); President of Belmont College (St Clairsville, OH); and President of Klamath Community College (Klamath Falls, OR).
A resident of Sun City West since 2004, Wes enjoyed an active retirement life. He was an avid golfer and competed in hickory (wood shafted) golf tournaments; he was active with The Prides as well as several other organizations including the Metal, Boomer's, and Zymurgy clubs. Wes was a gourmet amateur chef, created a family cookbook, and his special hobby was making his own sausage.
Wes is survived by his wife, Deborah (Tomasch) Channell; daughter, Erin Channell of Kansas City MO; sisters and brother-in-laws, Jan & Dan Ritter of Stilwell, Kansas and Ruth & Greg French of Sun City West; stepson and daughter-in-law, Joel & Sandra Hecht of Las Vegas, NV. He was predeceased by his parents; younger brother, William George Channell; and his first wife, Susan Kathryn (Duggins) Channell.
Per his wishes, there will be no services. However, the family suggests donations to local Sun City West charities: The Prides, Helping Hands, and the Community Fund.
