Mary Radziszewski Obituary

Radziszewski, Mary
Mary Nestor Radziszewski, 83, died peacefully on April 8, 2020 at Yale New Haven Hospital due to complications of COVID-19. She was predeceased by the love of her life, Walter S. Radziszewski, Sr. Mary is survived by devoted children Mary-Claire Zoghb (Nicolas), Walter S. Radziszewski, Jr. (Debbie), and Suzanne Redmond; beloved granddaughters Rachel Houston of Charlotte, NC, and Randi Daugustinis, Esq. (Thomas) of Saint Augustine, FL; cherished great-granddaughters Isabella and Charlotte; and numerous accomplished nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and godchildren. Mary is also survived by cousin Florence Szeligowski of Bethany. The only daughter of Jadwiga Adamski and Walter J. Nester, Sr., Mary was born on February 7, 1937, and grew up in New Haven's Cedar Hill neighborhood with three older brothers. Predeceased by John J. Nester (Joan) and Francis J. Nester (Joan), she is survived by Walter J. Nester, Jr. (Patricia) of North Haven. Mary lived her life in service to others. After St. Mary's High School, she graduated from the St. Raphael's School of Nursing in 1957, where she was class president. She worked in the emergency room, where she enjoyed the challenge of dealing with varied crises. While her children were young, she spent days with them on Lake Street beach (the family moved to West Haven in 1964). She went back to work as a school nurse at Notre Dame High School in order to enjoy summers camping with her family. Later, Mary and her extended family spent many weekends at their home on Cape Cod, where she hoped to retire. With her passion for learning, Mary earned a Masters degree from Southern Connecticut State University and began teaching health education at Notre Dame High School. On the school's behalf, she applied for and won grants to teach courses she designed (while sitting in a beach chair at Lake Street): a sex education seminar for seniors and a parenting course. Next, she launched a highly successful career in real estate. She served her clients with love and expertise. After attending daily Mass, she would head out to list and show properties. She won numerous awards and honors for her service to her community, including a 2009 Jimmy Award. With her husband, Mary was a dedicated parishioner of Our Lady of Victory Church, where she served on the Finance Committee, worked at countless annual carnivals, and put her nursing skills to use as a member of the church's Wellness Team. She also served for many years as president of the Seth Haley Scholarship Committee, which awarded grants to seniors graduating from West Haven High School, among others. Mary's family is grateful to the caring staff of Seacrest Retirement Center for filling the past two years with joy and companionship. A funeral Mass and celebration of Mary's life will be held at a date to be determine.
Services and Burial will be private. Arrangements have been entrusted to the PORTO FUNERAL HOME, 830 Jones Hill Rd., West Haven. Sign Mary's guest book online at

Once again, we knew Mary only professionally, when we were trying to sell our house. In fact, she did sell another one that I was in charge of selling for a family member a few years later. She was not just all business, although she was very professional. There was also a personal warmth and charm about her, however, that we immediately responded to. I know how very difficult it is to lose our family members, and how sometimes, even years after their passing, looking at what others have shared and said about them on sites such as this, can keep them alive in our memories and hearts. I again offer condolences to Mary's family on losing such a lovely lady. She isn't forgotten.

I also was shocked to hear Mary's name on PBS NewsHour and want to extend our condolences to her family. My husband and I first met Mary while she was showing a house to us. Though we didn't buy it, she was so friendly, while also professional, she left an impression and we called her a few years later when we were selling a house. She was a lovely lady -- and I'm not certain which of those two words say the most about her. Though we didn't know her well, we spent a fair amount of time not just discussing houses but also her life and her family -- of whom she seemed most proud. I was so sad to hear the news and hope that good memories of this lovely lady help to sustain all of you at this difficult time.

This is a late condolence to Mary's family as Mary's passing had just appeared on the 8/14/20 PBS Newshour during their commemoration of those who passed away from Covid-19 and I was shocked and deeply saddened to see it. Mary was my dearest friend years ago on Grace St. where we often played Squares and Hopscotch on the sidewalk in front of her house. She was a lovely and wonderful friend. My deepest sympathies to her family and all the other friends who have been blessed in knowing her.

I remember Mrs. Radziszewski as our School Nurse (and Health teacher) back in the 1980's at Notre Dame High School in West Haven. She was such a nice woman and a great teacher. May she rest in peace.

I am sorry for your loss. I only stumbled upon this obituary today (April 18, 2020), quite by accident. I was saddened / shocked to see her name listed in a news report about corona-virus deaths in Connecticut.

Eternal rest grant unto her, Oh, Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon her.

A belated thanks, Mrs. Radziszewski, for all that you did for all of us students at Notre Dame, way back when. Many thanks!

I just looked up her old picture in my old 1983 ND yearbook. I remember her as if it were yesterday. It's been almost 40 years. Hard to believe.

Rest in peace.

Sincerely,

Joseph A. Spadaro /

I once worked with Mary at Wiechert Real Estate agency. She helped sell my mother-in-law house in 2011. Surprising to find her living in the same place as my mother in law and they became fast friends and were often seen chatting together. Since my mother-in-law also passed 4 days later than Mary, I am sure that they are continuing the conversation up in heaven. Gone for now but never forgotten
