Christopher Gray Obituary

Gray, Christopher
Christopher Charles Gray died August 25, 2018, following a long battle with MS. Chris, age 67, a resident of New Haven, was born in Bethpage, New York. He is the son of the late Donald E. Gray and Eileen E. Gray. He lived in North Haven and Orange, CT. He graduated from Amity High School in 1968 and with his interest in art, attended Emerson College in Boston, MA. Chris Gray was a resident of New Haven most of his adult life and ran unsuccessfully for New Haven mayor under the Green Party in the 1980's. He was a political activist and champion of the elderly and was a reporter for "The Elder" newspaper in New Haven. For a time in the 1970's, he was a talk show host on Yale Radio. He was an employee of the Yale Co-op in the book department for many years. Chris's love for New Haven and service to his community were a big part of his life. He leaves behind two brothers, Donald Gray (Maureen) Fredericksburg, VA, Brian Gray (Laurie), Wallingford, CT and one sister Eileen LeVine (Martin) North Branford, CT and his devoted caregiver, Yoboua Kouassi.

Our condolences to all of Chris' family. We visited Chris at the rehab facility a couple years ago. He had access to the internet there and showed us Facebook photos of his niece and her family in Australia (do I remember right?). We weren't able to see him when he was back in his apartment at Bella Vista because of our caregiving for our mothers (something I'm sure Chris understood).

In the 1980s and early '90s we were in various organizations with Chris, in meetings, rallies, anti-Apartheid actions, May Day celebrations, New Haven Green Party events. Chris played a large part in our activist lives in New Haven and we are grateful for being able to learn from him and bounce ideas back and forth to help make New Haven a better city. We proudly voted for him for Mayor when he ran on the New Haven Green Party ticket.

He had a cutting-edge intellect, great sense of humor, and he helped many social-justice organizations get off the ground. He was an excellent editor and proofreader and a good friend.

Our condolences to all the family.
