Darr, Carmel
Carmel B. Darr, of Wallingford (formerly of West Haven), died December 6, 2017, at The CT Hospice in Branford. She was predeceased by her husband, Earl R. Darr. Carmel was born in New Haven on October 1, 1940, to the late Edward D. Benoit and Carmela Celone Benoit. She was a 1959 graduate of Wilbur Cross High School. Carmel had volunteered for two years with the Ground Observers Corps of the Air Force under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. She worked at the Hotel Taft and the A.C. Gilbert Company, both in New Haven, before her children were born. Carmel volunteered for over 14 years with the Alma Pagels School PTA in West Haven, serving as Hospitality Chair, Treasurer, and Vice President, as well as with the Bailey Middle School PTA. She was also a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for five years. In 1981, she began working outside the home again at the Colonial Meat Center and Bakery in Milford. In 1989, Carmel went to work as a secretary at Dentek Dental Labs, also in Milford, CT. Then in 2007, Carmel and her husband moved to Wallingford. She was a member of the Ridge Road Seniors and the Wallingford Senior Center. She was also a member of the Pinta 5 Columbiettes, serving as Sentinel. She is survived by her three daughters: Lisa A. Gagne and her husband Michael of Wallingford; Maureen R. Darr and Karen D. Darr, both of East Haven; as well as her grandchildren Christyn Gagne and Stephen Gagne, also of Wallingford. She is also survived by one sister, Josephine (John) Tracanna of West Haven, as well as a brother, Edward (Grace) Benoit of East Haven; and sister-in-law Judy Benoit of East Haven; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins; including her dear friend and cousin Carmel Sirico. She was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary and Pat Calandro, and Angelina and Luciano Grillo, and by a brother, Anthony Benoit. Her family will receive relatives and friends at The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St., Ext., Wallingford, on Sunday Dec. 10, 2017 from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9 a.m. from the funeral home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be immediately following Mass at All Saints Cemetery in North Haven. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to her favorite charity, .
