Dr. David A. Ross Russell Obituary
Ross Russell, Dr. David A.
Dr. David Andrew Ross Russell, 57, beloved husband of 33 years to Dorothy Goldberg, passed away peacefully from pancreatic cancer on January 27 at his home in East Haven, surrounded by his family.
David was born in Bishops Stortford, UK, to the late Dr. Ian and Hazel (Bolton) Ross Russell. He enjoyed a happy childhood and early on decided to follow in his father's footsteps and become a general (family) practitioner. He completed his undergraduate education at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University, and his clinical medical training at University College, Oxford University. He met the love of his life, Dorothy Goldberg, while singing in a choir at Trinity College and that began a life of adventure and love. Dorothy and David married in Oxford in 1984 and their first child, Rebecca (Bekka), was born in England. In 1989, after completing General Practice training in England, they moved to the US where David completed two more years of residency and palliative care training through Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, NJ. In 1991 the family moved to Wallingford, CT, where their son Adam was born and David founded Wallingford Family Practice. Over the years the practice grew and today includes three other medical partners and several mid-level providers. David was Board certified in both Family Practice and Palliative Care, and his heart was also with his 26 years as a hospice medical director with the organization that eventually became Hartford Healthcare at Home Hospice program.
Perhaps his greatest professional achievement was being part of the founding group and 20 year Board member of ProHealth Physicians, a statewide organization of primary care doctors, recently acquired by OptumCare. In his spare time, this Renaissance man enjoyed singing, sailing, woodwork, watercolors, programming computers, and he could fix absolutely anything; there really wasn't much he couldn't do. He was a man of absolute integrity and kindness, with a great sense of humor and a passion for life. The hundreds of testimonials from patients, colleagues and friends pouring in during his last days testify to the extraordinary impact he made on his community.
In addition to his wife, David is survived by his son Adam (Emilie) of Portland OR, his daughter Bekka (Riz) of Branford CT, grandchildren Zawadi and Simon, brother Rob (Maria), sister Sarah, and an army of loving family including many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and -nephews.
The family would like to thank the many people who helped bring comfort in this most difficult time: a multitude of friends; his partners and staff at Wallingford Family Practice; and all who have been by his side at ProHealth Physicians. Thank you also to VNA Community Healthcare of Guilford homecare and hospice team, especially Susan, Christi, Dr. Crescenzo and Donna, who provided loving care in his last days to our whole family.
