Dorothy Dupont Obituary

duPont, Dorothy
Dorothy Elizabeth Lane duPont, 93, of Evergreen Woods in North Branford, CT passed away peacefully on March 26th after succumbing to pancreatic cancer. She was the widow of Benjamin duPont. Born in Meriden, CT on August 16, 1927, she was the daughter of Marion Proudman Lane and Samuel Virgin Lane. She is survived by her daughter Margaret duPont and her husband Joseph Fortin of East Cialis, VT, her sons Benjamin duPont Jr. and his wife Pamela duPont of Chester, CT, Lane duPont and his wife Elizabeth duPont of Newport, RI, granddaughter Alta duPont and three grandsons, Chase duPont, Stefaan duPont, and Julian duPont. Just days prior to her passing she acknowledged and welcomed her first great-grandson Pascal duPont. She and her husband traveled extensively including favorite trips to New Guinea, Antarctic, the Galapagos and Machu Picchu. Having met as sailors, Dot and Ben purchased a Block Island 40 yawl "Rhubarb" in 1954. It was the center of their local adventures. They sailed in 5 Bermuda races, winning their class in one. During the 1959 Southern Series, they won the Miami Nassau race. Later they sailed to Maine and back every summer, spending time in its many harbors along the way. After her husband passed in 1999, she continued the trips to Maine for 10 years with the help of friends. They loved skiing and in 1965 built a house in Stowe, VT where they enjoyed 30 years of skiing with friends and family. Dorothy was an associate volunteer at Yale University Peabody Museum in the Entomology Department. She also volunteered her time at Visiting Nurse and Red Cross in Branford. She was a member of The New Haven Badminton Club and The Pine Orchard Bowling Group. She was also a member of The Pine Orchard Yacht Club, The Cruising Club of America, Off Soundings Club, The New York Yacht Club, North American Station of the Royal Scandinavian Yacht Clubs and North Cove Yacht Club in Saybrook, CT. Dorothy was an avid reader. She kept herself busy with puzzles, board games, and cards. She was also an accomplished photographer and loved opera. She was always known to share her honest opinions on things, but she was very generous in her philanthropy and loved her family. Funeral services will be held for family only. However, a celebration of her life will occur over the summer.

What a remarkable well lived life. She passed on to her descendants an appreciation of the arts and the inspiration for outdoor sports adventures.
She knew how to have fun on the water that’s for sure.
