Duarte Cabral Obituary

Cabral, Duarte
Duarte Dumas Cabral, age 75, passed away on January 16, 2018 during heart surgery in Albany Medical Center, New York. He had written some thoughts for his obituary, and in his honor, much of what he wrote has been included here.
He was born on August 20, 1942 in Willimantic, CT to Gertrude Dumas Cabral and Duarte Cabral, Sr. Duarte's childhood began in a home with a wood-burning stove for heat, an old-fashioned icebox, and eventually a party-line to make phone calls. For the first four years of his life he was raised by an aunt and uncle. Later, he was raised in a multigenerational household that included his mother, grandfather, brother, and aunts. Duarte's nose was crooked, and he was fond of remembering a time when his high school basketball coach told him he couldn't play in a game with a broken nose. Duarte immediately ripped the bandage and packing from his nose and jumped into the game. He graduated from Tourtellotte Memorial High School in 1960 and frequently remarked on the high quality education he received there.
He served in the Air Force from 1962 to 1969, where he was a Chinese Voice Intercept Operator and Traffic Analyst. He was extremely proud of his years in the USAF and felt the Air Force had shaped his character. Those who knew Duarte are familiar with his Air Force stories, which are too numerous and too colorful to be included here.
After the Air Force, he returned to CT, where he met Jean Cabral in 1977 while working at Burndy Corporation in Norwalk, CT. He swept her off her feet and to the West Coast, where they married in Daly City, CA in 1979 before returning to CT. Duarte was her cherished husband for over 38 years. They spent most of their marriage in Milford, CT, but delighted in their trips "down South," usually to Florida. Duarte especially loved golfing, fishing, and taking road trips to horse tracks across the United States. He was exceptionally proud of all his children and demonstrated a depth of unconditional loving support towards them that they will remember always. He particularly treasured the time he spent with his grandson, Jack, often playing with magnetic blocks and race cars.
He is predeceased by his son, Gary Cabral, who passed in 1985, but was remembered and deeply loved by Duarte everyday since then; his cousin, Isabelle Gileau, who passed in 2017; and his parents, Gertrude Cabral and Duarte Cabral. Duarte is survived by his wife, Jean Cabral (Leveritt); his son, Kelsey Cabral, daughter-in-law, Megan Murray-Cabral, and grandson, John (Jack) Cabral; his daughter, Jephrie Cabral and her partner, Mathew Foust; his brother, Stuart Cabral and sister-in-law, Sue Cabral; sister-in-law Mary Marchetti and brother-in-law Al Marchetti; brother-in-law John Leveritt; mother-in-law Grace Leveritt; and nieces and nephews including Timothy Pullen (who he once encouraged to tap an alligator with a golf club at a course in Florida); Dawn and Ed Zinkewich and grand-niece Grace, Danielle and Zared Goldfarb and grand-niece Matilda; Kevin Marchetti; and Laura Marchetti. Remembrances will be shared at a private memorial gathering, date and time to be announced.

To Jean and the Cabral family, my deepest condolences. I knew Duarte for 30 years and every day was special. He made me laugh at work and many times we reverted to 13 year olds seeing if we could get away with it. I will cherish the memories and keep him and his family in my prayers.

Duarte and I were in the same Basic Chinese class at Yale University in 1961-62. He was a great guy and a good friend. I lost track of him after all of us shipped out to our overseas assignments in August 1962. Thank you for posting the wonderful obituary.

I didn't see Duarte often, but when I did he was always so warm and friendly. It was obvious how much he and my cousin Jeany loved each other

Duarte was a wonderful guy -- a loving and attentive husband and a greatly supportive and loving father. He was the kind of man who listened, to his friends, to his family, and cared. He will be greatly missed.
