Hugh J. Devine Jr. Obituary
Devine, Hugh J. Jr.
Hugh James Devine Jr., age 75, passed away peacefully at his home on January 7, 2018. Born in New Haven on April 10, 1942, he was the son of the late Hugh Sr. and Ida Bruen Devine. He grew up and attended school in West Haven and was a graduate of Notre Dame High School in 1960. A longtime resident of Orange, Hugh was a retired small business owner who started his own decorating contractor business in 1976, later joined by his son Hugh III who continues to run the business to this day. Hugh took great pride and satisfaction in his workmanship, attention to detail, and exceptional client service. Hugh proudly served as a medic in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1964-1970. Hugh's faith was an important part of his life and he was an active parishioner at Holy Infant Church in Orange. Hugh was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved fishing the waters of Long Island Sound in his boat, Final Fling. Hugh enjoyed watching sports and was a passionate fan of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins, New England Patriots and the University of Notre Dame. Hugh was an animal lover and he devotedly cared for several cats and dogs over the years. Hugh was outgoing, dependable, generous, and funny and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Hugh is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years Bette Fitzharris Devine; three adored children, son Hugh Devine III and his wife Lisa of West Haven, son Dan Devine and his wife Genya of Madison, NJ, daughter Kerry Brite and her husband Robert of St. Augustine, FL; eight cherished grandchildren, Delaney, Kaitlyn, Carson, Hugh IV, Daniel, Sasha, Max, and Anastasia; dear cousin Mary Hanke of West Haven and other relatives. The family would like to thank Dr. Johanna LaSala and Dr. Gina Chung of the Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Center in Orange and Dr. Joyce Chung at The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital in Derby for their compassionate care and treatment of Hugh as well as the nurses and staff at both facilities who were so kind and caring. The family is grateful to the CT Hospice nurses and the Visiting Angels aide, Saran, who helped to make Hugh's final days content and peaceful.
The family will receive friends from 4p.m. to 8p.m. at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green on Friday January 12, 2018. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Saturday January 13, 2018 at Holy Infant Church, 450 Racebrook Road, Orange. Memorial donations may be made to CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT 06405. For online condolences please visit our website at
