Richard Thomas "Dick" Hagens Obituary
Hagens, Richard Thomas "Dick"
Richard Thomas Hagens (Dick), 88, died Wednesday February 21, 2018 at Connecticut Hospice with family by his side. He was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY on June 7, 1929, the son of the late John Joseph and Matilda Hagens. His wife, Rosemary Theresa Hagens (Peers), predeceased him in 2010, after 55 years of marriage. He is survived by his children: Rosemary Rubsam and her husband, John, of Branford, CT, Richard and his wife, Ellen, of Chatham, NJ, Matthew and his wife, Donna, of Westboro, MA, and his adored grandchildren: Erin Aylward and husband, Joseph (Tadgh), and great-granddaughter, Phoebe, John Rubsam and wife, Melissa, and great-grandsons, Johnny and Tyler, Lindsey Hagens, Kyle Hagens, Lauren Hagens, Chelsea Rubsam, and Ian Hagens. He was predeceased by his siblings: Anna Mae Walker, John (Jack) Hagens and Dolores Stackpole Astarita. Dick was a graduate of St. John's University, earning a business degree in 1960. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran who served from 1951-53.
Dick dedicated many volunteer hours as a driver for Connecticut Hospice, where he aptly spent his final days, at peace near the shores of the Long Island Sound. In earlier years Dick enjoyed watching his children compete in basketball and softball events, summers at Highland Lakes, NJ, with family, spending time on the water, boating and swimming, and welcoming the addition of beloved English sheepdog, Cleo, to their family. Nothing gave him greater joy than to be at events that included Hagens and Peers family members and friends, his favorite NY teams of Mets, Giants, Knicks, and horseracing too. Dick worked for New York Telephone, later AT&T, from 1948 until his retirement in 1985. He also enjoyed "snowbirding" in Jensen Beach, FL, always welcoming visitors. We will miss his funny quips, of which there was an abundance, but know that he has been welcomed warmly into the afterlife. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dick's name to Montfort Spiritual Center, 26 S. Saxon Ave. Bayshore, NY 11706; or to Daughters of Wisdom, 385 Ocean Ave. Islip, NY 11751; or to Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd. Branford, CT 06405. A memorial service, along with a celebration of his life, will be held for Dick on June 2, 2018 at St. Mary Church, 731 Main St, Branford, CT 06405.
