Butler, Roger E.
Roger Earl Butler, 99, of Haddam, died at his home on September 4, 2018. Roger was born in Middletown, the only child of Jesse Erastus Butler and Rose (Herrmann) Butler. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Joan (Williams) Butler. Roger graduated from Deep River High School in 1936. He picked apples for Hazen's & Latchaw's, worked for Remington Rand and built seawalls in 1938. He worked for Middlesex Silver and Wilcox & Crittenden. He joined the Navy in 1943 serving until 1946. He retired from American Cyanamid in 1986 after 38 years. He later worked at Chemtek from 1987 to 2008 and retired at the age of 89. Roger is survived by a son, Jesse E.-A. Butler (Kim) of Florida, three daughters, Melaine Smigel of Haddam, Merrie Butler (Declan Conroy) of New York, Ellie Kasimir (Tom Carr) of Killingworth, five grandchildren; Andries Smigel (Christine) Anson Smigel (Jamie), Jessica Butler, Kelsey Butler and Gage Kasimir, great grandsons, Alaric and Nolan Smigel, also a very special cousin, Judith Graham. A sincere thank you to the wonderful hospice nurses and aids who cared for Roger for 20 weeks. Funeral services will be held Thursday September 13, 2108 at 7 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home 3 Silver Street, Middletown. Friends may call prior to the service from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial with military honors will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Haddam Center Cemetery.
