Hendon, Rufus Staples
Rufus Staples Hendon, age 98, died on Wednesday, September 5th, 2018, in New Oxford, PA. He was born October 27th, 1919, in Pensacola, FL, to the late Rebecca Solomon Hendon and Rufus Hendon.
Rufus received his B.A. in anthropology from the University of Chicago in 1940 and his Ph.D. in anthropology from Yale University in 1960. He was a professor of linguistics at Yale University until his retirement in 1988. He conducted fieldwork in Malaysia and Indonesia. After his retirement, he maintained his interest in the Indonesian language and computer programming.
During World War II, he served as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy.
Rufus is survived by his loving daughters, Alison and Julia Hendon. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Jane Bein Hendon.
