GREENGAS, HERBERT ABRAHAM“Herb” Herb Greengas, age 81 of Hamden, CT passed away at his home on Sunday afternoon, July 24, 2016 with family by his side. Born in New Haven, CT on April 15, 1935, he was the son of Rose Greengas Siegle (deceased) and Raymond Green (deceased) and brother of Milton Greengas (deceased). He was a devoted husband, father and Zayde. He leaves his loving wife Linda (Heller) and children Jeremy Greengas, Joena Russell, Rebecca Greengas Bear (Russ), Joseph Greengas (Jackie), David Greengas (Eden), Danyel Greengas Grant (Ed) and Rachel Greengas and six grandchildren – Tommy, Evan, Maura, Iris, Joshua and Gabriel who made him so proud every day and never ceased to make him smile, along with many nieces and nephews. Herb had a very strong work ethic which he passed on to his children. His first “professional” job was at the New Haven Water Company. He held the position of Purchasing Director and Assistant Treasurer. His last and final position was School Inspector for the City of Waterbury Board of Education which he worked for over 20 years. No matter how time consuming or demanding his job could be, he always put the needs of his family first. He never missed a birthday, school event and prided himself on his efforts to maneuver a ski slope without falling. Herb grew up in New Haven, CT in the home of a single mother and made it his life’s mission to make sure his family was well taken care of. He loved collecting baseball cards, cheering on the New York Yankees and playing pinochle, a love that he passed on to his children. In his later years, you could find him playing Bingo at Foxwoods Casino or controlling his wife’s enthusiasm at the WNBA’s CT Sun’s basketball games. Services will be held Tuesday at 1PM at Robert E. Shure Funeral Home in New Haven, CT followed by graveside services at Columbus Lodge Cemetery, Jewel Street, New Haven. Shiva will be observed from Tuesday through Friday and Sunday at his home 195 Brentwood Drive, Hamden, CT. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Temple Beth Sholom in Hamden, CT or the CT Sun Foundation, or the charity of one’s choice. May his memory be a source of strength and a blessing.
