Anthony Massaro Obituary
Anthony Joseph Massaro of Branford, CT died on September 15, 2017. He was 98 years old. He was born in New Haven, CT on May 30, 1919 to Joseph and Pasqualina (Gianotti) Massaro. One of nine children, he left school to work in the New Haven railroad. During WWII he worked in a civil defense position with the railroad assisting the US army in the transport of German POWs brought to the states from Europe. In 1945 he married Frances Consiglio (now deceased).
Mr. Massaro enjoyed several careers during his long lifetime. For several years after the war, while continuing to work at the railroad, he and his wife owned and operated a restaurant called the Guilford Spa. In the mid1950s Mr Massaro went into the commercial fish business with his father-in-law, Frank Consiglio, and operated "Tony's Fish Market in Hamden, CT. Then in 1967 he became employed by SNET where he worked as a repairman until his retirement in 1979. Also in 1967 he and his wife opened the Branfordshire Country Store, a favorite of local children, in Branford until 1981
A man of many skills, throughout his life he was very adept as an auto mechanic, carpenter, electrician and plumber and even worked as a musician playing drums in many local bands during the 1940s & 50s. He could always back up his claim that he could repair just about anything.
Anthony is predeceased by siblings Mary Massaro, Victoria Gurieno, Phyllis Oliveri, Carol Forto, and Joseph Massaro. He is survived by his son Marc-Anthony Massaro of Branford, two of his sisters, Theresa Florio of Hamden, Rose Savo of North Haven and a brother Michael Massaro of New Haven as well as many nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to calling hours on Friday, Sept. 22 from 5 – 8 pm at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St, Guilford. Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated on Sat. Sept. 23 at 10 am in St. Therese Church, 105 Leetes Island Rd, Branford. Burial will follow in Beaverdale memorial Park, New Haven.
