Jacquie DORLAND Obituary

Jacqueline Dorothy Elizabeth Dorland passed away peacefully in her home, on August 18th, 2021, in her 91st year. Predeceased by her husband Russell Dorland (2006), her brother Bill Miller and her sister Jyl Johnson. Devoted mother to Dixon Dorland (Kathi Power), Chris Dorland, and Peggy-Louise Toy (Randy). Loving Grandmother to Paul, Rachel, Madeline, Cameron and Jeffrey and to great grandchild Fern Jacqueline.

Jacquie Miller grew up in humble surroundings in Walkerton, ON, the eldest of three children. Through her artistic talents and outstanding academics she was accepted into the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD) and completed the Commercial Art program. Soon after she met Russell Dorland, a dashing air force veteran of WWII - he was looking to have some signs painted! Love blossomed, they married and started their family, first in Belleville, Picton and then Toronto. Jacquie worked in commercial art, designing ads and labels, as her family grew. With the kids eventually in school Jacquie attended Teachers College and soon began teaching art in Junior High Schools in the North York Bd of Ed. She and Russ eventually retired to the St Davids, NOTL area.

Jacquie loved to cook and entertain friends and family. Over the years she and Russ travelled extensively through Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America, parts of South America and Asia as well as around Canada and the US. Her house, her cuisine and her art were so influenced by memories of these trips.

Jacquie was an accomplished watercolour painter, and was recognized for her talents through awards at juried shows. Over the years her many friends in the Parkway Artist's Guild, the Brushstrokes group and the Pumphouse Art Gallery provided opportunity to develop and share her talents. Her original Christmas cards, created yearly for 50 years, were joyfully anticipated by friends and family.

Many thanks to the small army of careworkers who helped keep her comfortable these past months; PSWs from Paramed and CarePartners, nurses Lilya and Geneva, Lori, Jenny and Beth at the LHIN, and Dr. David Dec and staff for all their help over the years.

Patrick J. Darte has been entrusted with arrangements. As per her wishes there will be no funeral. If desired, memorial donations can be made to Seed Change (formerly the Unitarian Service Committee). It would be appreciated by her family.

Aunt Jacquie was a joy to be with and I always will remember the times I had growing up to see her and family in the summer and to experience the feeling of family unlike my own home experience
