Helen GREVES Obituary

Our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother died peacefully in the early morning of December 26 in her 96th year. Helen was born July 4, 1925 in Merritton Township, now part of St. Catharines. Predeceased by her parents, Edgar and Ellen Haslam, her five brothers Edgar, Jack, Bill, Ted and Albert Haslam and her sister Irene. The Haslam family was well known in St. Catharines, especially the Western Hill area. Helen was married in 1947. Her three sons were born from 1948 to 1955 and raised on Seventh St. (now Dorchester St.), Niagara-on-the-Lake. Never a shortage of kids to play or fight with, Mom would send us out in the morning and tell us not to come home until supper time. During the early sixties, Helen started working two jobs to support her family, working at Niagara District Secondary School as secretary to Ben Bramble and NOTL Library as librarian in the old Court House. Her, now adult, sons realize just how hard she worked to sustain the family. Later she was the innkeeper at the Gate House. For the last three decades Helen lived independently in NOTL and became notorious for her walks across town. Dear mother of Rob (married Joanne Vanderlaan) (1970), their children Samantha (Kevin Felsbourg) and Michael, Ted (married Carolyn Lockard) (1970), their children Kerri (Rob Falk) and Michelle, and Tim (married Dana Bastings) (1980), children Kyle and Deven. Great-grandchildren: Kerwin, Maxine, Lily, Fletcher, Emma and Mya. Helen is survived by her younger sister, Betty Johnson of Hamilton, and her nephew, Danny and family. A special thank you to Margaret McGilvray for her friendship to Helen. Memorial donations to The Salvation Army or your favourite charity would be appreciated. In honouring Helen's wishes a private family service has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to Considerate Cremation & Burial Services, 52 Scott Street West, St. Catharines (between Ontario Street & South Service Road), 289-362-1144. I am sorry to hear about your Mothers passing. I didn´t know. We always send Christmas cards to each other and I wondered why I did not receive one.
I really liked Helen and I will miss her.

To Rob, Ted and Tim:
Your mother was such a special lady and mother. I remember her so well and she will be missed by so many. Growing up in NOTL and being a good friend of Rob I did see a lot of Helen. She was always friendly and so kind. I met with her at her home some years ago when I retired and we had such a good time reminiscing about the good old days. I know that she will be especially missed by the family.
I would love to chat with Rob when he finds the time. My sincere condolences to all of you.

So sorry to hear of Helen's passing. She meant so much to me at NDSS. She is the reason I worked in the library field for 25 years. She was such a great influence on myself and many other students. My condolence to the family on the list of such a wonderful woman.

I knew Helen as Tim's mother and my niece Dana's mother in law. Helen and I enjoyed talking together at family gatherings and making comments to each other just for laughs. I will miss her very much at future get togethers and will always have special memories of our times together.
